Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony: a powerful symbol of freedom
In 2023 speelde het NNO Beethovens Negende Symfonie op Lowlands, met verpletterend succes. Hier bleek hoe een poppubliek enthousiast en geëmotioneerd kan raken door een klassiek meesterwerk. Het succes was te danken aan de bijzondere chemie tussen orkest, het publiek en chef-dirigent Eivind Gullberg Jensen. Wie er niet bij was kan nu de inhaalslag maken in de concertzaal, wederom met Gullberg Jensen op de bok. En ook al is de setting nu anders, de muzikale zeggingskracht blijft gelijk. Want Beethovens Negende heeft nu eenmaal een unieke symbolische lading. Het begin is vergeleken met het ontstaan van het universum of de Schepping. En in het slotdeel staat een compleet koor op dat broederschap en vrijheid bezingt. Deze melodie werd verheven tot Europees volkslied en geldt wereldwijd als symbool van verbinding en vrede. Daaraan is altijd behoefte, misschien nu nog wel meer dan ooit.

In 2023, the NNO performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Lowlands, with overwhelming success. It showed how a pop audience can become enthusiastic and emotionally moved by a classical masterpiece. The success was due to the special chemistry between orchestra, audience and chief conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen. Those who were not there now have the chance to catch up in the concert hall, once again with Gullberg Jensen on the podium. And even though the setting is different, the musical impact remains the same. Beethoven’s Ninth has a unique symbolic meaning. The beginning has been compared to the creation of the universe or Creation itself. And in the final movement, a full choir rises to sing about brotherhood and freedom. This melody was elevated to the European anthem and is seen worldwide as a symbol of unity and peace. There is always a need for that, perhaps now more than ever.
