Benieuwd hoe de repetities voorafgaand aan de concerten van het Noord Nederlands Orkest gaan? Kom dan een openbare repetitie bijwonen. Luister hoe de dirigent samen met het orkest een deel van het concertprogramma van die week repeteert. De openbare repetities zijn gratis toegankelijk en duren van 12.00 tot 12.30 uur.
Muziek kan een film maken of breken. Filmmuziek kan razend goed zijn. En dat hoor je eigenlijk pas écht bij een live uitvoering. Sommige soundtracks zijn zó orkestraal dat ze voor de concertzaal gemaakt lijken te zijn. Dat geldt zeker voor de epische, heldhaftige muziek die Pinar Toprak schreef voor de Captain Marvel-verfilming uit 2019. Hieruit klinkt een medley van hoogtepunten. Twee andere componisten, Rachel Portman en Debbie Wiseman, schiepen een heerlijk romantische klankwereld voor respectievelijk Chocolat en Oscar Wilde, twee sfeervolle films die hun succes sterk aan de muziek dankten. Alan Silvestri´s afsluitende muziek voor Forrest Gump is een klassieke tranentrekker, in Elmer Bernsteins Magnificent Seven-thema herleeft de klank van het oude Hollywood. En natuurlijk zijn er bekende ‘signature themes’, zoals die van Superman, Mission Impossible en James Bond. Onnodig te zeggen dat zulke muziek voor de orkestleden heerlijk is om te spelen – dus is er zelfs zonder film tóch genoeg te zien.

Music can make or break a film. Film music can be incredibly good. And you really only hear that truly during a live performance. Some soundtracks are so orchestral that they seem made for the concert hall. This is certainly true for the epic, heroic music Pinar Toprak wrote for the 2019 Captain Marvel film adaptation. A medley of highlights can be heard from it. Two other composers, Rachel Portman and Debbie Wiseman, created a wonderfully romantic sound world for Chocolat and Oscar Wilde, respectively—two atmospheric films that owed their success largely to the music. Alan Silvestri’s closing music for Forrest Gump is a classic tearjerker, and in Elmer Bernstein’s Magnificent Seven theme, the sound of old Hollywood is revived. And, of course, there are famous ‘signature themes’, such as those from Superman, Mission Impossible, and James Bond. Needless to say, such music is a delight for the orchestra members to play—so there is still plenty to see even without a film.
