Wat begon als een jazzband is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot iets dat veel groter is dan dat: Snarky Puppy beweegt al ruim twintig jaar buiten alle kaders. Het collectief rond bassist Michael League staat bekend als een internationale kracht die genres samenbrengt en is onmogelijk in een hokje te plaatsen, behalve die van ongeremde muzikaliteit. Na een sold-out show in AFAS Live keert de band na elf jaar terug naar Groningen voor een nu al legendarisch optreden in de Kleine Zaal.
Snarky Puppy heeft een hechte band met Nederland. Met hun toegankelijke mix van rauwe funk, soul, jazz en progressieve rock stond het collectief meerdere malen op North Sea Jazz Festival, namen het succesalbum We Like It Here op in Kytopia en maakten met het Metropole Orkest het Grammy-winnende Sylva, waarvan afgelopen januari het vervolg Somni verscheen. De band werkt met een roulerende bezetting van topmuzikanten die ook actief zijn als soloartiest, producer of sessiemuzikant voor uiteenlopende namen als Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, David Crosby, Jacob Collier, D’Angelo en Kendrick Lamar. Snarky Puppy is de springplank en uitlaatklep voor de carrières van namen als Cory Henry, Shaun Martin, Mark Lettieri, Bill Laurance, Chris Potter, Justin Stanton, Larnell Lewis, Robert ‘Sput’ Searight. What started as a jazz band has since grown into something much bigger than that: Snarky Puppy has been moving beyond all boundaries for over twenty years. The collective around bassist Michael League is known as an international force that brings genres together and is impossible to pigeonhole: xcept under the heading of unrestrained musicality. After a sold-out show at AFAS Live, the band returns to Groningen after eleven years for what is already shaping up to be a legendary performance in the Kleine Zaal.
Snarky Puppy has a close connection with the Netherlands. With their accessible mix of raw funk, soul, jazz, and progressive rock, the collective has performed multiple times at the North Sea Jazz Festival, recorded the successful album We Like It Here at Kytopia, and created the Grammy-winning Sylva with the Metropole Orkest, followed this past January by its sequel, Somni.
The band works with a rotating lineup of top musicians who are also active as solo artists, producers, or session musicians for a wide range of names such as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, David Crosby, Jacob Collier, D’Angelo, and Kendrick Lamar. Snarky Puppy serves as both a launching pad and creative outlet for the careers of artists such as Cory Henry, Shaun Martin, Mark Lettieri, Bill Laurance, Chris Potter, Justin Stanton, Larnell Lewis, and Robert Sput Searight.
