Meskerem Mees
Als Meskerem Mees begint te zingen, gebeurt er iets magisch. Met enkel haar stem, akoestische gitaar en de cello van sister in arms Febe Lazou, laat ze haar songs openbloeien tot onweerstaanbare folkpopparels. Op 11 maart presenteert ze haar debuutplaat Julius in de Lutherse Kerk, een prachtige plek om haar warme, intieme songs te ervaren.
Met droomdebuut Joe gooide ze hoge ogen in binnen- en buitenland, opvolgers Seasons Shift en Astronaut bevestigden haar status van toptalent. Een status die Meskerem Mees al op mooie plekken in Europa bracht, met stops in Berlijn, Parijs en – als kers op de taart – het prestigieuze Montreux Jazz Festival aan het meer van Genève.
En nu is er Julius, een debuutalbum om bijzonder trots op te zijn. De melodieën en refreinen van de dertien songs nestelen zich onvermijdelijk tussen je oren en met trefzekere teksten – nu eens to-the-point, dan weer poëtisch – trekt Meskerem je in haar liedjes. Songs die, als ze een halve eeuw geleden geschreven waren, net zo goed uit de pen van pakweg Bob Dylan of Joni Mitchell hadden kunnen rollen.
Tijdens de Music Moves Europe Awards op Eurosonic begin dit jaar won Meskerem Mees de prestigieuze Grand Jury Prize!
Hiermee komt ze in het rijtje van eerdere winnaars waaronder: Adele, Stromae, Dolores O’Riordan, MØ, Tiziano Ferro, Lykke Li, Katie Melua, Damien Rice, Mumford and Sons and Dua Lipa. Deze jaarlijkse prijs voor populaire en hedendaagse muziek, medegefinancierd door de Europese Unie, viert opkomende artiesten die het Europese geluid van vandaag en morgen vertegenwoordigen.
