From a twentieth-century masterpiece to a vibrant Estonian tradition
De Mis voor dubbelkoor van Frank Martin is een monumentaal maar ingetogen werk waarin twee koren elkaar afwisselen en samenvloeien in een rijke, bijna tijdloze klankwereld. Martin componeerde het stuk in 1922, schoof het daarna in zijn bureaula, voegde in 1926 een diepontroerend Agnus Dei toe, om het vervolgens weer terug te leggen in dezelfde la. Pas in 1963 ging zijn mis in première, om daarna uit te groeien tot een van de meest geliefde koorwerken van de twintigste eeuw.
Natuurlijk is het meesterwerk van Martin in perfecte handen bij het Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, een van de allerbeste koren ter wereld. Maar als het in 1981 door Tõnu Kaljuste opgerichte ensemble zich ergens thuis voelt, dan is het bij de koormuziek van hun landgenoten. De samenwerking met Arvo Pärt is daarbij iconisch. Van hem hoor je Which Was the Son of…, een van Pärts meest verstilde koorwerken. Ook de muziek van Veljo Tormis verspreidde zich wereldwijd dankzij Kaljuste en zijn koor. Evelin Seppar vertegenwoordigt een jongere generatie en geeft de rijke Estse zangtraditie een eigentijdse invulling.

Which Was the Son of…
Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir is a monumental yet introspective work in which two choirs alternate and merge into a rich, almost timeless sound world. Martin composed the piece in 1922, then set it aside in a desk drawer, added a deeply moving Agnus Dei in 1926, and returned it to that same drawer. Only in 1963 was the Mass premiered, after which it grew into one of the most beloved choral works of the twentieth century.
Martin’s masterpiece is, of course, in perfect hands with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, one of the finest choirs in the world. Yet if there is one place where the ensemble, founded in 1981 by Tõnu Kaljuste, truly feels at home, it is in the choral music of their compatriots. Their collaboration with Arvo Pärt is iconic. His Which Was the Son of…, one of his most meditative choral works, will be performed. The music of Veljo Tormis also spread worldwide thanks to Kaljuste and his choir. Evelin Seppar represents a younger generation, giving a contemporary voice to Estonia’s rich choral tradition.
