Ode to the female composers of the past and present
Eeuwenlang stonden ze in de schaduw van hun mannelijke collega’s, maar met SHE zet Chorwerk Ruhr de schijnwerpers voluit op de vrouwelijke componisten van toen en nu. In dit bijzondere programma klinkt muziek die raakt, schuurt en verrast, geschreven door vrouwen die, vaak tegen de stroom in, hebben bijgedragen aan het koorrepertoire. Mede dankzij Chorwerk Ruhr krijgen ze de erkenning die zij verdienen.
Het programma opent met het spirituele O virtus sapientiae van de middeleeuwse componiste, mystica en wetenschapper Hildegard von Bingen. Van daaruit loopt de lijn verrassend direct naar het heden, met delen uit de Pulitzer Prize-winnende Partita for 8 Voices van Caroline Shaw. Tussen die uitersten ontvouwt zich een rijk palet aan stijlen en emoties. Renaissance- en barokmuziek van Maddalena Casulana en Barbara Strozzi staat naast romantische miniaturen van Fanny Hensel en Clara Schumann. Ook de warme lyriek van Florence B. Price en de verstilde zeggingskracht van Alice Tegnér krijgen een plek. Met muziek van Imogen Holst – dochter van componist Gustav Holst – en een nieuw werk van Nana Forte belandt SHE weer in onze tijd.
SHE is een muzikale ontdekkingstocht langs stemmen die er altijd zijn geweest. Een ode aan de vrouwelijke creativiteit, maar ook een staalkaart van wat topniveau in ensemblezang vandaag de dag kan betekenen.

For centuries they stood in the shadow of their male colleagues, but with SHE, Chorwerk Ruhr shines a full spotlight on the female composers of the past and present. In this special program, music is heard that touches, challenges, and surprises, written by women who, often against the grain, have contributed to the choral repertoire. Thanks in part to Chorwerk Ruhr, they receive the recognition they deserve.
The program opens with the spiritual O virtus sapientiae by the medieval composer, mystic, and scientist Hildegard von Bingen. From there, the line leads surprisingly directly to the present, with excerpts from the Pulitzer Prize-winning Partita for 8 Voices by Caroline Shaw. Between these extremes, a rich palette of styles and emotions unfolds. Renaissance and Baroque music by Maddalena Casulana and Barbara Strozzi stands alongside romantic miniatures by Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann. The warm lyricism of Florence B. Price and the serene expressiveness of Alice Tegnér also find a place. With music by Imogen Holst – daughter of composer Gustav Holst – and a new work by Nana Forte, SHE lands back in our time.
SHE is a musical journey of discovery through voices that have always been there. An ode to female creativity, but also a showcase of what top-level ensemble singing can mean today.
