UB40 is coming to De Oosterpoort! The world famous reggae and pop band from Birmingham scored big hits with songs such as ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ and ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’. The Brits brought reggae to the attention of the larger audiences in the eighties, but always remained faithful to the social consciousness of the genre: the name UB40 even refers to a former form of the English social services to apply for unemployment benefit. After many successful years front man/ lead singer Ali Campbell left the band in 2008. The other band members continued touring, but after a while co-founders Mickey Virtue and Astro went their own way. Meanwhile Ali Campbell was working on a solo album and made use of his old friends Virtue and Astro to contribute to this project. Since then, this trio has formed UB40 again. Consequently, the album will be released later this year as a genuine UB40 record. And in November they are coming, with the original singers, to Groningen to treat you to all their hits.

UB40 komt naar De Oosterpoort! De wereldberoemde reggae- en popband uit Birmingham scoorde grote hits met nummers als ‘Red Red Wine’, ‘Kingston Town’ en ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’. De Britten brachten in de jaren 80 reggae onder de aandacht van een breed publiek, maar zijn altijd trouw gebleven aan het sociale bewustzijn van het genre: de naam UB40 is nota bene ontleend aan een voormalig formulier van de Engelse sociale dienst om een werkloosheidsuitkering aan te vragen.
Na vele succesvolle jaren verliet frontman/leadzanger Ali Campbell de band in 2008. De overige bandleden tourden door, maar na verloop van tijd kozen ook mede-oprichters Mickey Virtue en Astro hun eigen weg. Ondertussen werkte Ali Campbell aan een soloplaat en hij schakelde oude bekenden Virtue en Astro in om hun steentje bij te dragen. Dit trio vormt sindsdien weer UB40. En zodoende verschijnt dit album later dit jaar als een echte UB40 plaat. En in november komen ze, dus mét de oorspronkelijke zangers, naar Groningen om u te trakteren op al hun hits.

Radio Riddler is het project van Fast Leiser en Frank Benbini van Fun Lovin’ Criminals, ontstaan uit hun gezamenlijke liefde voor reggae en dub muziek. Onlangs verscheen de debuutplaat ‘Purple Reggae’, waarop Prince’s gehele ‘Purple Rain’ album in een reggae jasje gestoken wordt.
