Paul Hillier was medeoprichter van het Hilliard Ensemble en leidde jarenlang het Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. Met het Grammy Award winnende Theatre of Voices brengt hij sinds 1990 voortreffelijke interpretaties van oude en hedendaagse muziek. Tijdens Songs of the Earth hoor je vooral vroeg-klassiek werk van componisten als William Byrd (1543-1623), Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) en Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643).
Laatgenoemde drukte de grootste emoties uit in ontroerend mooie muziek. Zo componeerde hij een prachtig werk ter nagedachtenis aan zangeres Caterina Martinelli, die de titelrol in zijn opera Arianna had moeten zingen, maar op negentienjarige leeftijd overleed aan pokken. Theatre of Voices laat je horen hoe mooi Monteverdi ‘de tranen van de minnaar aan het graf van zijn beminde’ verpakt in een van de parels uit de madrigaalkunst. Heel wat anders staat je te wachten bij Cries of London, waarin Gibbons op originele wijze de drukte op een Londense markt rond 1600 op muziek zet.
Maar er is ook hedendaags werk, want wie Paul Hillier zegt, zegt Arvo Pärt. De Britse dirigent werkte al vele malen samen met de bejubelde Estse componist, wiens muziek ook op dit programma dus niet ontbreekt. De avond begint en eindigt met twee verwante ‘songs of the earth’ van de Zweedse componiste Karin Rehnqvist, winnares van de Nordic Music Prize 2023. Haar vocale muziek is geworteld in traditionele Scandinavische zangtechnieken.

Paul Hillier was one of the co-founders of the Hilliard Ensemble and led the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir for many years. Since 1990, he has been putting out excellent renditions of early and contemporary music with the Grammy Award winning Theatre of Voices. During Songs of the Earth you will mainly hear early classical works by composers such as William Byrd (1543-1623), Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) and Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643).
Monteverdi evoked great emotions with hauntingly beautiful music. He composed a beautiful piece in memory of singer Caterina Martinelli, who was meant to fulfill the title role in his opera Arianna, but died of smallpox at the age of nineteen. A very different experience awaits you with Cries of London, in which Gibbons converts the bustle of a London market around 1600 into a highly original musical composition.
Of course, there will also be contemporary work, because Paul Hillier also means Arvo Pärt. The British conductor has collaborated many times with the acclaimed Estonian composer, whose music is also included in this program. The evening begins and ends with two related ‘songs of the earth’ by the Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist, winner of the Nordic Music Prize 2023. Her vocal music is grounded in traditional Scandinavian singing techniques.
