The Netherlands' best choir explores the thin but fascinating line between madness and genius
In een grensverleggend concert verkent het Nederlands Kamerkoor de dunne maar fascinerende lijn tussen gekte en genialiteit. Waanzin! is een theatrale reis langs werken van de Frans-Libanese componist Zad Moultaka en de Engelse componist Peter Maxwell Davies, vol culturele en historische dwarsverbanden. Het programma verbindt de mystieke poëzie van de ‘gestoorde’ negende-eeuwse soefist Al-Halladj met de waanwereld van de Engelse koning George III.
Het concert opent met een nieuw werk voor koor en klavecimbel van de Frans-Libanese componist Zad Moultaka. Hij gebruikt hiervoor teksten van de beroemde mysticus en dichter Al-Halladj, vaak gezien als een martelaar van de mystieke, islamitische filosofie. Zijn radicale uitspraken, zoals de beroemde zin ‘Ik ben de Waarheid’, werden door sommige van zijn tijdgenoten als ‘gestoord’ beschouwd.
Eight Songs for a Mad King van Sir Peter Maxwell Davies vertelt het verhaal van de door waanideeën geteisterde Engelse koning George III. De onvoorspelbare structuur van het stuk weerspiegelt de innerlijke chaos van de koning en de grens tussen rationaliteit en waanzin.

In a groundbreaking concert, the Netherlands Chamber Choir explores the thin yet fascinating line between madness and genius. Waanzin! is a theatrical journey through works by the French-Lebanese composer Zad Moultaka and the English composer Peter Maxwell Davies, full of cultural and historical cross-connections. The program connects the mystical poetry of the ‘mad’ ninth-century Sufi Al-Hallaj with the delusional world of the English King George III.
The concert opens with a new work for choir and harpsichord by the French-Lebanese composer Zad Moultaka. For this, he uses texts by the famous mystic and poet Al-Hallaj, often seen as a martyr of mystical Islamic philosophy. His radical statements, such as the famous phrase ‘I am the Truth’, were considered ‘mad’ by some of his contemporaries.
Eight Songs for a Mad King by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies tells the story of the English King George III, plagued by delusions. The unpredictable structure of the piece reflects the king’s inner chaos and the boundary between rationality and madness.
