Gesualdo Six
Een betoverende reis van dageraad tot schemering met fenomenaal Brits vocaal ensemble
An enchanting journey from dawn to dusk with a phenomenal British vocal ensemble
“Je hebt de neiging om je ogen te sluiten, zo onwaarschijnlijk mooi klinkt de meerstemmigheid van het ensemble”, schreef de Volkskrant na een eerder concert van dit fenomenale Britse vocale ensemble. Voor dit concert bundelt The Gesualdo Six de krachten met trompettiste Matilda Lloyd voor een muzikale reis van duisternis naar dageraad, waarin werken uit de gouden eeuw van de polyfonie worden gespiegeld aan hedendaagse composities.
Centraal staat O radiant dawn van James MacMillan, een indringende zetting uit diens Strathclyde Motets, waarin hoop en verwachting bijna tastbaar worden. Bijzonder ook is Aura van Richard Barnard, dat mede in opdracht van The Gesualdo Six is geschreven en waarin de trompet van Lloyd soms als stralend baken boven het ensemble uitkomt, om vervolgens naadloos met de stemmen te versmelten. Een ander hoogtepunt is Nunc Dimittis van Geoffrey Burgon, bekend geworden als eindmuziek van de BBC-serie Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979). Het concert opent met twee vocale meesterwerken uit de Engelse renaissance, van Thomas Tallis en Robert White, en ook muziek van Hildegard von Bingen komt voorbij.
Veel werken zijn ook te horen op de in 2024 verschenen cd Radiant Dawn, die net als dit concert niet alleen een bijna meditatieve luisterervaring biedt, maar ook een fraaie staalkaart van vocale ensemblekunst en vernieuwend repertoire.

“You tend to close your eyes, so improbably beautiful is the polyphony of the ensemble,” wrote de Volkskrant after an earlier concert by this phenomenal British vocal ensemble.
For this concert, The Gesualdo Six joins forces with trumpeter Matilda Lloyd for a musical journey from darkness to dawn, in which works from the golden age of polyphony are mirrored with contemporary compositions.
At the center is O radiant dawn by James MacMillan, an intense setting from his Strathclyde Motets, in which hope and expectation become almost tangible. Also notable is Aura by Richard Barnard, commissioned in part by The Gesualdo Six, in which Lloyd’s trumpet sometimes rises as a radiant beacon above the ensemble, before seamlessly blending with the voices. Another highlight is Nunc Dimittis by Geoffrey Burgon, known as the closing music of the BBC series Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1979).
The concert opens with two vocal masterpieces from the English Renaissance by Thomas Tallis and Robert White, and music by Hildegard von Bingen also features.
Many of these works can also be heard on the 2024 album Radiant Dawn, which, like this concert, offers not only an almost meditative listening experience but also a rich survey of vocal ensemble artistry and innovative repertoire.
