Blueslegende Taj Mahal omschreef hem ooit treffend: “The boy has got thunder in his hands.”
Alvin Youngblood Hart is considered one of today’s leading interpreters of country blues. Born in California, he spent much of his youth in Mississippi, where family members introduced him to the raw, traditional blues of the American South. Those influences can still be heard throughout his music.
Hart, however, is impossible to pin down to a single genre. Alongside country blues, he draws just as easily from 1960s and ’70s guitar rock, western swing and traditional country. His playing is celebrated for its power and authenticity. Blues legend Taj Mahal once summed it up perfectly: “The boy has got thunder in his hands.”
Hart released his debut album, Big Mama’s Door, in 1996. In 2003, Down in the Alley earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album. Since then, he has further established his reputation as a versatile guitarist and singer who not only keeps American roots music alive, but gives it a distinctive character of his own.
