Op zaterdag 24 februari komt dirigent en meesterpianist Sir András Schiff met een van de allerbeste symfonieorkesten ter wereld naar Groningen voor een exclusief concert in De Oosterpoort. Op het programma staan drie topwerken uit de klassieke muziek: het Brandenburgs Concert nr.5 van J.S. Bach, het Pianoconcert nr.23 van Mozart en Mendelssohns Symfonie nr.4 (‘Italiaanse’).

Als je als pianist en dirigent ‘Sir’ voor je naam mag zetten, behoor je tot de categorie excellent. Sir András Schiff draagt de titel sinds 2014 voor bewezen diensten aan de muziek. Hij wordt internationaal gezien als een van de grootste pianisten van onze tijd – of zelfs van alle tijden. Zijn Bach-uitvoeringen behoren tot de jaarlijkse hoogtepunten van de BBC Proms. In Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam was Schiff meermaals te beluisteren in de serie Meesterpianisten en in februari 2023 maakte hij in de Nederlandse tempel van de klassieke muziek opnieuw diepe indruk: “András Schiff is op de toppen van zijn kunnen en verleidt de luisteraar optimaal. Absoluut verpletterend”, schreef muziekjournalist Frederike Berntsen in Het Parool.
Een van de beste symfonieorkesten ter wereld
Excellent is ook een keurmerk dat van toepassing is op de Staatskapelle uit Dresden. Opgericht in 1548 mag het zich met trots Europa’s oudste symfonieorkest noemen. En dat niet alleen: het gezelschap prijkt al sinds jaar en dag op de lijst Beste Orkesten Ter Wereld, samen met onder andere de Berliner Philharmoniker, het Boston Symphony Orchestra, het London Symphony Orchestra en het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest.
Drie topstukken uit de klassieke muziek
Tijdens het concert in De Oosterpoort soleert Schiff in Bachs Vijfde Brandenburgse Concert en Mozarts sprankelende Pianoconcert nr.23. Geroemd als hij is om zijn Bach en Mozart-uitvoeringen zal hij als geen ander de ziel van beide werken weten bloot te leggen. Daarna neemt hij plaats op de bok om je samen met de musici mee te nemen in Mendelssohns geliefde Symfonie nr. 4, een muzikale ansichtkaart uit het negentiende-eeuwse Italië.

Sir András Schiff has held the honorary title of ‘Sir’ since 2014 for his excellent contributions to music. Excellent is also a quality mark that applies to the famous Staatskapelle from Dresden. With a tradition that reaches back to 1548, it can justly call itself Europe’s oldest symphony orchestra. But that’s not all: the company has been on the list of Best Orchestras in the World for many years, alongside names such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Boston Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. In short: this is symphonic excellence at its best!
Schiff not only stands on the dais, but also takes place behind the grand piano during Mozart’s vibrant Piano Concerto No. 27. Renowned for his Mozart performances, he is able to tap into the soul of the work. Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 was created after a long sojourn in Italy. His impressions of Italian art and architecture, the vast countryside and the lavish village festivals reverberate in this energetic work. The evening opens with Bach’s Orchestral Suite no. 3.
