Pussy Riot’s oprichter Maria Alyokhina vertelt het verhaal van Punk Prayer, het protest in een kerk in Moskou waarvoor ze bijna twee jaar in de gevangenis heeft gezeten. Scherpe monologen geïllustreerd met echte beelden en energieke noise-punk. De voorstelling Riot Days neemt je mee naar 2012, toen Alyokhina met Pussy Riot het altaar van de Kathedraal van Christus de Verlosser in Moskou beklom voor een guerrilla performance als protest tegen de steun van de Orthodoxe Kerk aan Putin tijdens de verkiezingen.
Ode aan verzet en activisme
Op live beelden was toen te zien hoe leden van Pussy Riot ruw in een politiebus werden gegooid om naar een strafkolonie in Siberië afgevoerd te worden. Riot Days is verontrustend, maar vooral prikkelend, gedurfd en energiek; een ode aan de kracht van verzet en activisme.
Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot is een Russisch activistisch kunstcollectief uit Moskou. Sinds de oprichting heeft de groep elf verschillende vrouwelijke leden gekend. Het collectief voerde verboden provocerende guerrilla punk rock performances op in de openbare ruimte. De protesten werden opgenomen, verwerkt in muziekvideo’s en op internet gezet. De collectieve thema’s van de performances waren feminisme, LHBT rechten en verzet tegen de Russische president Vladimir Putin, waarvan de groep vindt dat het een dictator is.
Riot Days
In 2016 ontwikkelde Maria Alyokhina samen met muziekproducer Alexander Cheparukhin en theaterregisseur Yury Muravitsky Riot Days, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Alyokhina dat uitkwam in 2017. De voorstelling is al gespeeld op festivals en podia in Amerika, Australië en Nieuw Zeeland en ontving lovende kritieken. In 2019 komt de show naar Spanje, Portugal, Duitsland, Oostenrijk en vijf podia in Nederland.

Join Pussy Riot Theatre founder member Maria Alyokhina as she retells the story of the ‘Punk Prayer’, the collective’s protest in a Moscow cathedral that landed her nearly two years in prison.
With fevered monologues underpinned by real footage and frenetic noise-punk, Riot Days takes us back to 2012 as Alyokhina and Pussy Riot ascend the altar of Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour for a guerilla performance protesting the Orthodox Church’s support for Putin during his election campaign. Alyokhina then takes us with her as she’s bundled into the back of an autozak – a Russian acronym meaning ‘automobile for the incarcerated’ – recounting strip searches and solitary confinement during her stint in a Siberian penal colony. It’s disturbing but defiant, courageous and energising – a testament to the power of resistance and activism.
It’s all based on Alyokhina’s new book, also called Riot Days, that revisits the events leading up to her incarceration. Together with a host of collaborators, she’s transformed the book into this unique piece of performance art for fractious times – exploring resistance and protest around the world.
