Het Kronos Quartet heeft het klassieke strijkkwartet de afgelopen dertig jaar een complete make-over gegeven. Sinds de oprichting in 1973 heeft het Amerikaanse ensemble ruim zeshonderd speciaal voor hen geschreven werken in première gebracht en allerhande interessante zijwegen bewandeld. Er zijn raakvlakken met jazz, pop, minimal music, wereldmuziek en fusion, maar ook samenwerking met dichters, popartiesten en/of choreografen is voor deze vier musici de gewoonste zaak van de wereld. Tijdens dit concert hoort u bewerkingen van muziek van onder meer het IJslandse Sigur Rós, de Syrische volkszanger Omar Souleyman (afgelopen zomer nog te zien op Lowlands), Bob Dylan, Delia Derbyshire (de grootmoeder van de elektronische muziek), beroemde filmmuziek van Clint Mansell en het aangrijpende ‘WTC 9/11’, dat Reich voor het Kronos Quartet componeerde.
Cross-over between classical music, pop music and jazz
The
Kronos Quartet has given a complete makeover to the classical string
quartet. Since the American ensemble started out in 1973 they have
premiered over six hundred pieces which were especially written for
them, but the have also explored other musical directions. They have
experimented with jazz, pop, minimal music, world music and fusion, but
they have also worked together with poets, pop artists en
choreographers. During their concerts The Kronos Quartet play music by
i.a. the Icelandic Sigur Rós, the Syrian folksinger Omar Souleyman (who
also performed at Lowlands 2012), Bob Dylan, Delia Derbyshire (the
grandmother of electronic music) and film music written by Clint
Mansell, but they play all the songs in their own unique way. Reich
specially composed ‘WTC 9/11 for the Kronos Quartet a touching and
intriguing piece.
