ALOK (die/hun), de internationaal geprezen dichter, comedian, performer, acteur, activist en publiek spreker – komt op zaterdag 1 juni naar de Machinefabriek in Groningen. 

ALOK trad al op in meer dan 600 zalen in 40 landen. Hun opvallende performance stijl combineert poëzie, comedy en audio-visuele kunst en exploreert thema’s zoals gender, afkomst, trauma en vervreemding. Zo speelde die al uitverkochte shows op het Edinburgh Fringe Festival en in het Kennedy Performing Arts Center en was die de headliner op Just for Laughs in Vancouver, Toronto en Montreal. Hun optredens worden beschreven als ‘provocerend en krachtig’.

Op het grote scherm kan je ALOK bewonderen in o.a. de gelijknamige documentaire geregisseerd door Jodie Foster, in de Neflix documentaire Getting Curious With Jonathan Van Ness en ook in het HBO late-night sketchprogramma Random Acts of Flyness. Op televisie zijn ze te zien in veelgeprezen HBO Max-serie SORT OF tegenover Bilal Baig, Hulu’s Planet Sex met Cara Delevingne. ALOK is ook de maker van de #DeGenderFashion-beweging, die die in de spotlight zette tijdens de Business Fashion Voices Conference in 2019.

ALOK schrijft daarnaast ook boeken, waaronder Beyond the Gender Binary, dat wordt omschreven als een oproep voor een nieuwe aanpak van gender in de 21ste eeuw. Het boek, gebaseerd op hun eigen ervaringen als een gender non-conforme artiest. De performer werd bovendien opgenomen in de NBC’s Pride 50-lijst van meest invloedrijke change-makers in de LGBTQ-gemeenschap, HuffPo’s Culture Shifters en Business Insider’s Doers, naast vele andere erkenningen.

QUEER NARRATIVES - a writing workshop with Ayden Carlo and Nic Bruckman

To get into the mood of ALOK’s program in the evening NITE is hosting a QUEER NARRATIVES writing workshop for everyone who wants to expand their writing skills and who is interested to dive into (their own) queer narratives.

Ayden Carlo and Nic Bruckman both queer writers themselves are going to lead the workshop.

WHAT: Getting to know each other, short input from the workshop leaders, writing assignment 1, lunch, writing assignment 2, presentation of the results, feedback round. (a ticket for the workshop does not include lunch)

ALOK (they/them) is an internationally acclaimed poet, comedian, public speaker, and actor. ALOK’s literary works “Beyond the Gender Binary,” “Femme in Public,” and “Your Wound, My Garden,” have garnered global recognition. Their dynamic presence has captivated audiences in over 40 countries, with sold-out shows at venues including Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and headlining numerous Just For Laughs Festivals.

ALOK can currently be seen in Hannah Gadsby’s Gender Agenda comedy special on Netflix and will take center stage at the Netflix is a Joke Festival in May 2024. Their show has been described as “provocative and powerful” (CHORTLE) and a “jaw-dropping celestial event” (TO DO LIST LONDON).

For their contributions to culture and entertainment, they have been honored with the ACLU of Southern California Bill of Rights Award, Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment Trailblazer Award, and were selected as the inaugural LGBTQ Scholar in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania. They are the subject of the docu-short “ALOK” executive produced by Jodie Foster and directed by Alex Hedison, which made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024.

On screen, they can also be seen in Complicated Order opposite Midori Francis, The Trans List, and (forthcoming) Absolute Dominion opposite Patton Oswalt. On television, they can be seen on season 3 of the critically acclaimed HBO Max series SORT OF opposite Bilal Baig, Hulu’s Planet Sex with Cara Delevingne, ABC’s PRIDE: To Be Seen – A Soul of A Nation, Netflix’s Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, and HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness.
