A Lock Without A Key
Thomas Beijer (1988) is een van de weinige meesterpianisten die Nederland rijk is. Hij is echter ook componist en schrijver. In dit recital maak je kennis met verschillende aspecten van deze veelzijdige musicus: van de door corona geïnspireerde liedcyclus A Lock Without A Key die hij schreef voor Laetitia Gerards tot de vertolking van twee wondermooie werken van Schubert en Schumann.
Over de liedcyclus schrijft hij: ‘Aanvankelijk had ik het idee om een cabaretesk stuk te schrijven over een zangeres en een pianist, maar het wilde niet zo vlotten. Toen kwam de lockdown. Laetitia en ik wonen samen, maar een vrijgezelle vriend van ons werd na een paar weken in zijn eentje thuis zitten, helemaal gek. We skypeten veel. Je ziet iemand, hoort iemand, maar er ontbreekt iets wezenlijks. Dat vormde de inspiratie voor het eerste lied Dedigitise now.
Ik koos voor het Engels omdat dit ‘smoother’ zingt en beter past bij het Bernstein-achtige karakter dat ik met de liederen voor ogen had. Toen ik de teksten af had, ben ik gaan componeren. Laetitia gaf tussendoor commentaar. Vanuit onze studio in de tuin liep ik regelmatig naar de woonkamer om haar te vragen of dat wat ik bedacht had, voor haar zou werken. Ik heb geprobeerd de teksten niet al te letterlijk aan de coronacrisis te koppelen en zocht naar een zekere lichtheid, zonder daarbij de ernst van de situatie uit het oog te verliezen.’

Thomas Beijer is not only a masterful pianist, he is also a composer and a writer. All these talents come to the fore in tonight’s musical programme, A Lock Without A Key, which includes the performance of two masterpieces by Schubert and Schumann and a recital of the five songs Beijer composed for the debut album of soprano and partner Laetitia Gerards.
These five songs (A Lock Without A Key – A Cycle of Five Songs for Soprano and Piano) were inspired by their own personal experiences during Corona. ‘At first, I wanted to create a more cabaret style piece about a singer and a pianist, but it never really came together. Then our country went into lockdown. Laetitia and I were already living together at that time, but a single friend of ours got a bad case of cabin fever, after weeks of being stuck at home, all by himself. We kept in contact through Skype, but it just wasn’t the same. Something essential was missing. This became the inspiration for my first song, Dedigitise Now.
I chose to write the songs in English because I felt it was a better fit for the musical, Leonard Bernstein-like, style I had in mind. Laetitia gave feedback throughout the whole process. I tried not to reference the Corona crisis too directly. I wanted to add a little levity, while never losing sight of the gravity of the situation.’
