Waiting for the Barbarians
In januari 2027 wordt Philip Glass negentig jaar, een mijlpaal die wereldwijd wordt gevierd met concerten, opera’s en festivals. De Nederlandse Reisopera presenteert samen met Club Guy & Roni en het Noord Nederlands Orkest Waiting for the Barbarians, een theatrale explosie waarin zangers, dansers en een gigantisch orkest het late meesterwerk van Glass uitvoeren.
De opera is gebaseerd op de met een Nobelprijs bekroonde roman van J.M. Coetzee en speelt zich af in een naamloos grensgebied van een rijk dat geobsedeerd is door een dreiging van buitenaf: de zogenaamde barbaren. Centraal staat een magistraat die aanvankelijk loyaal is aan het systeem, maar begint te twijfelen wanneer hij geconfronteerd wordt met geweld en propaganda. Waiting for the Barbarians gaat over ‘wij’ en ‘zij’, over angst voor ‘de ander’, machtsmisbruik, desinformatie en de vraag hoe individuen zich staande houden binnen een repressief systeem. Met een internationale topcast en de jonge honden van Club Guy & Roni’s Poetic Disasters Club zijn alle ingrediënten aanwezig voor een overrompelende theaterervaring. Engels gezongen, met Nederlandse en Engelse boventiteling.

In January 2027, Philip Glass turns ninety, a milestone being celebrated worldwide with concerts, operas, and festivals. Together with Club Guy & Roni and the North Netherlands Orchestra, the Dutch Touring Opera presents Waiting for the Barbarians, a theatrical explosion in which singers, dancers, and a gigantic orchestra perform Glass’s late masterpiece.
The opera is based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by J.M. Coetzee and is set in an unnamed border region of an empire obsessed with an external threat: the so-called barbarians. At its center is a magistrate who is initially loyal to the system but begins to have doubts when confronted with violence and propaganda. Waiting for the Barbarians is about ‘us’ and ‘them’, about fear of ‘the other’, abuse of power, disinformation, and the question of how individuals hold their own within a repressive system. With a top international cast and the young guns of Club Guy & Roni’s Poetic Disasters Club, all the ingredients are present for an overwhelming theatrical experience.
