Book of Angels
Maya Fridman, een van Nederlands’ avontuurlijkste cellisten, gaf afgelopen voorjaar drie geweldige soloconcerten in de serie ODE. In november komt Fridman naar De Oosterpoort met het veelbelovende nieuwe kwartet dat ze vormde met de Parijse altviolist Garth Knox. Maya en Garth worden bijgestaan door Soheil Shayesteh op kamanche (Perzisch strijkinstrument), live elektronica en visuals, en Jacobus Thiele op percussie.
Met als vertrekpunt het Book of Angels van de beroemde New Yorkse componist John Zorn neemt het kwartet je mee op avontuur door een kleurrijk muzikaal landschap. De op de traditionele joodse cultuur gebaseerde stukken van Zorn, oude Midden-Oosterse melodieën, improvisaties en eigen composities van de vier musici zorgen voor spannende cross-over muziek die de grenzen tussen stijlen en genres moeiteloos overbrugt. Maya Fridman is one of our country’s most adventurous cello-players. This past April the soloist already gave us three wonderful church concerts. In November, Fridman will return to Groningen, this time to De Oosterpoort, with the exciting new quartet she formed with the Parisian violist Garth Knox. Together, the four top musicians interlace the sounds of cello, viola, Iranian kamancheh (a Persian string instrument), percussion and voice with live electronics and real-time visuals.
Kicking off with the Book of Angels by the famous New York composer John Zorn, the quartet takes you on an adventurous through a colourful musical landscape. The combination of musical pieces by Zorn – steeped in Jewish culture and tradition – ancient Middle Eastern melodies, improvisations and original compositions by the four musicians provide exciting cross-over music that effortlessly bridges the gaps between styles and genres.
