Norwegian keyboard wizard plays three of Beethoven's final piano sonatas
In het najaar van 1838 vertrok Frédéric Chopin samen met de schrijfster George Sand naar het eiland Mallorca. Het werd een periode van ziekte, slecht weer en ontberingen, maar ook van grote artistieke inspiratie. Daar, in het klooster van Valldemossa, werkte hij aan wat later een van zijn meest bijzondere composities zou worden: de 24 Preludes opus 28.
Chopin baseerde de reeks op Bachs Das Wohltemperierte Klavier. Elk stuk staat in een andere toonsoort, afwisselend in majeur en mineur. De bekendste en tevens langste van de 24 is zonder twijfel nummer 15, de Regendruppelprelude.
Met Leif Ove Andsnes zit er een pianist van wereldklasse achter de vleugel. De Noor bracht talloze bekroonde cd-opnames uit en werkte met toporkesten zoals de Berliner Philharmoniker, de New York Philharmonic en – in november 2023 – met ons eigen Noord Nederlands Orkest.
Het concert opent met een korte selectie van pianostukken van Chopin en delen uit Játékok, een verzameling miniaturen van de bijna honderdjarige Hongaarse componist György Kurtág. Daarna hoor je Beethovens Pianosonate nr. 32 in c, zijn laatste pianosonate. Geschreven vijf jaar voor zijn dood en volledig doof, vat Beethoven hier zijn hele muzikale wereld samen in slechts twee delen.

Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas – Nos. 30, 31 and 32 – are among the most profound and moving pieces of music ever written. Beethoven composed the works in the last phase of his life, a period when he was no longer concerned with virtuosity or technical bravado, but instead sought musical and spiritual depth.
In this respect, with Leif Ove Andsnes, the dream pianist sits behind the grand piano. The Norwegian has worked with top orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, released numerous award-winning CD recordings and between 2011 and 2015 was the driving force behind The Beethoven Journey, in which he performed and conducted Beethoven’s piano concertos.
With Andsnes, technical perfection goes hand in hand with emotional depth. Whether he plays an intimate sonata or a grand piano concerto, as he will do in November 2023 with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, his playing is always clear, powerful and compelling.
