Het beste orkest ter wereld speelt Beethovens 3e Pianoconcert
Het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest behoort volgens internationale critici, samen met de Wiener Philharmoniker en de Berliner Philharmoniker, tot de beste orkesten ter wereld. Het werd opgericht in 1888 en draagt sinds 1988 het predicaat Koninklijk. Critici roemen de orkestklank, die uit duizenden herkenbaar is: de strijkers klinken ‘fluwelig’, het koper heeft een ‘gouden’ klank, het timbre van de houtblazers wordt omschreven als ‘persoonlijk’ en de slagwerkers uit Amsterdam genieten wereldfaam. Belangrijk is ook de invloed van de chef-dirigenten, waarvan er sinds de oprichting van het orkest in 1888 slechts zeven zijn geweest.

Oorlog en vrede
In 2018 is het honderd jaar geleden dat de Eerste Wereldoorlog eindigde en daarom verzorgt het KCO een concertreeks rondom het thema Oorlog & Vrede. U hoort de balletachtige suite uit Prokofjevs opera ‘Oorlog en vrede’, naar de gelijknamige roman van Tolstoj. Het temperamentvolle ‘Derde pianoconcert’ van Beethoven ontstond eveneens in tijden van oorlog en kondigt al voorzichtig het begin van de Romantiek aan. Het KCO opent met de populaire suite uit de opera ‘Háry János’ van Kodály, waarin een oud-soldaat in en herberg opschept over zijn heldendaden. Het concert staat onder leiding van de Tsjechische dirigent Jakub Hrůša, een specialist in muziek uit Centraal-Europa.

Best orchestra in the world plays Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3
According to international critics, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, together with the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Berliner Philharmoniker, is one of the best orchestras in the world. It was founded in 1888 and is designated ‘Royal’ since 1988. Critics praise the orchestral sounds that are one of a kind: the strings sound ‘velvety’, the brass has a ‘golden’ sound to it, the timbre of the wood players is described as ‘personal’ and the percussion section from Amsterdam is world-famous. The influence of chief conductors, of which there have only been seven since the orchestra was founded in 1888, is of major importance as well.
War and peace
In 2018 it is a century since the First World War ended and that is why the RCO presents a series of concerts themed War & Peace. The ballet-like suite from Prokofjev’s opera ‘War and Peace’, based on Tolstoj’s eponymous novel, is performed. The spirited ‘Piano Concerto No. 3’ by Beethoven was composed in times of war as well and it cautiously announces the era of Romanticism. The RCO starts with the popular suite from the opera ‘Háry János’ by Kodály, in which a former soldier brags about his heroic deeds in a tavern. The concert is led by Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša, specialist in Central European music.
