Grigory Sokolov
Als er zoiets als ‘dé pianist’ bestaat, dan heet hij Grigory Sokolov. Kenners beschouwen hem als de laatste vertegenwoordiger van de Russische virtuozenschool, die in de negentiende eeuw begon bij Anton Rubinstein. De eigenzinnige Russische grootmeester was al vele malen te gast in De Oosterpoort. Op dinsdag 6 juni 2023 ontvangen we hem opnieuw en speelt hij werken van Purcell en Mozart.
Het leven van de op 18 april 1950 in Sint-Petersburg (destijds Leningrad) geboren Sokolov staat volledig in dienst van de muziek. Hij slaapt slechts drie of vier uur per nacht, leidt een teruggetrokken leven, geeft zelden interviews, is wars van effectbejag en marketingcampagnes en streng vegetariër. Hij vindt het tijdverspilling om met orkesten te repeteren of cd’s op te nemen. Een bijzondere en onafhankelijke geest al met al, die van een andere planeet lijkt te komen. Maar dan wel een planeet van onvoorstelbare muzikale schoonheid.

De compromisloze toewijding klinkt door in Sokolovs recitals, die doorgaans plaatsvinden in de grootste en chicste concertzalen ter wereld. “Je kunt je geluk zoeken in reizen, spirituele trips of boeken. Of je woont een recital bij van de Russische meesterpianist. Een avond Sokolov is tripvervangend, want zijn musiceren is zelf een avontuur van en voor de geest. Sokolov mag je niet missen”, schreef NRC na een van zijn eerdere concerten. Neem die woorden maar ter harte!

If there is such a thing as ’the pianist’, Grigory Sokolov would be the man. Connoisseurs consider him the last representative of the Russian school of virtuosos, that started in the nineteenth century with Anton Rubinstein. On Tuesday June 6 2023 we will receive him again in De Oosterpoort. The line-up of his recital will depend on the inspiration of the moment.
Piano performance from another planet
The life of Sokolov, who was born on April 18, 1950 in Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad), is entirely devoted to music. He sleeps only three or four hours a night, leads a secluded life, rarely gives interviews, is averse to theatrics and marketing campaigns and is a strict vegetarian. He thinks it a waste of time to rehearse with orchestras or to record albums. Sokolov is a special and independent spirit, who seems to come from another planet, one of unimaginable musical beauty.

This uncompromising dedication is echoed in Sokolov’s recitals, which usually take place in the largest and chicest concert halls around the world. “You can seek your happiness in travel, spiritual trips or books. Or you can attend a recital by the Russian master pianist. An evening with Sokolov offers a perfect substitute for travel, because making music is itself an adventure of and for the mind. Sokolov is not to be missed,” NRC wrote in a five star-review on one of his previous concerts. Take those words to heart!
