Het zou onmogelijk zijn. Vier verschillende songwriters die hun krachten bundelen om één band te vormen. Maar toch is dat precies wat Fantastic Cat deed. Fantastic Cat is een samenwerkingsverband tussen songwriters Anthony D’Amato, Brian Dunne, Don Dilego en Hollis Brown-frontman Mike Montali. Tegen de weinige verwachtingen in maakten ze samen een debuutalbum, The Very Best of Fantastic Cat. Het album slingert vrolijk tussen genres en decennia, waarbij het 60’s folk en 70’s AM-radio muziek op zorgvuldige wijze combineert.
Individueel heeft elk lid zijn eigen indrukwekkende cv en een weelde aan lovende recensies. The Guardian beschreef Don Dilego “one to watch”. NPR schreef dat Anthony D’Amato “sings and writes in the tradition of Bruce Springsteen or Josh Ritter”. Rolling Stone noemde Brian Dunne’s laatste single “a stunner” en zei over Mike Montali’s band Hollis Brown dat het “the soundtrack for a late-night drive through the American heartland” is. Maar gezamenlijk ontstijgen deze artiesten hun verleden en komen ze tot een instrument-ruilend, tranen trekkend en bijdehand rock-en-roll geheel dat veel groter is dan de som der dingen. In maart 2023 mogen we deze bijzondere americana ‘supergroep’ verwelkomen in de Kleine Zaal.

They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, Monsters of Folk, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat, out now on Blue Rose Music. Captured in the wilds of the Pocono Mountains, the album gleefully careens between genres and decades, mixing electrified 60’s folk and 70’s AM radio gold as it balances careful craftsmanship and ecstatic abandon in equal measure.
