'A trip down memory lane!’ Feest voor liefhebbers van poppy reggae
De legendarische Britse reggaeband UB40 komt op 26 januari naar de Grote Zaal van De Oosterpoort! De Engelse succesband met hits als ‘Food For Thought’, ‘One In Ten’, ‘Kingston Town, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’ en natuurlijk ‘Red, Red Wine’ heeft nog niets aan glans verloren. De energieke optredens zijn ‘a trip down memory lane’ en een feest voor liefhebbers van poppy reggae.
Achttien studio- en vier live albums
UB40 werd in 1978 opgericht en verwijst met z’n naam naar het “Unemployment Benefit Form 40“, het formulier waarmee Engelse werklozen zich moesten aanmelden om een werkloosheidsuitkering te krijgen. Na het eerste album “Signing Off” (1980) konden de bandleden zich permanent uitschrijven bij de plaatselijke UWV. Sindsdien bracht de groep namelijk achttien studio- en vier live albums uit en besteeg de band uit Birmingham met meer dan vijftig singles de internationale hitlijsten. UB40 ontving vier maal een Grammy-nominatie voor Beste Reggae-album en verkocht wereldwijd meer dan zeventig miljoen platen.
Over and over again
Na tal van uitverkochte, succesvolle shows en festivaloptredens in 2015, ’16 en ’17 heeft de formatie nog altijd de smaak te pakken: “We’ve played to over hundreds of thousand fans over the last tours and can’t wait to do it all over and over again”.

De bezetting van UB40 bestaat uit ‘founding members’ Jimmy Brown (drums), Robin Campbell (co-lead vocals/gitaar), Earl Falconer (bas/zang), Norman Hassan (percussie/zang) en Brian Travers (sax/toetsen), plus Duncan Campbell (lead vocals, sinds hij in 2008 het stokje overnam van zijn broer), Martin Meredith (sax/keys), Lawrence Parry (trompet) en Tony Mullings (toetsen). Dat belooft een heerlijke trip down memory lane te worden met hits als ‘Food For Thought’, ‘One In Ten’, ‘Kingston Town, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’ en natuurlijk ‘Red, Red Wine’!

Legendary British reggae band UB40 will be performing in De Oosterpoort’s Main Auditorium on 26 January! The majorly successful English band, known for hits as ‘Food For Thought’, ‘One In Ten’, ‘Kingston Town’, ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You’, and of course ‘Red, Red Wine’, have not lost their lustre. Their energetic performances are a trip down memory lane and a celebration for aficionados of poppy reggae.
UB40 was founded in 1978 and its name refers to the “Unemployment Benefit Form 40”, the form English jobseekers had to fill in to apply for social security. After their first album “Signing Off” (1980), the band members could indeed permanently sign off at their local Employee Insurance Agency. Since then, the Birmingham band released eighteen studio albums and four live albums, as well as entered the international hit lists with more than fifty singles. UB40 was awarded with a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album four times and sold more than seventy million albums worldwide.

After a lot of sold-out, successful shows and festival performances in 2015, 2016, and 2017, the formation still have not lost their lustre: “We’ve played to over hundreds of thousand fans over the last tours and can’t wait to do it all over and over again”.
