Shelly Shonk Fiffit is een beeldende en muzikale trip door onze innerlijke wereld en de uithoeken van het heelal. Contratenor, performer en regisseur Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe maakt zijn nieuwe voorstelling vanuit zijn grote fascinatie voor de James Webb Space Telescope. Deze infraroodtelescoop is de grootste en geavanceerdste ruimtetelescoop ooit en kan ver en diep in het heelal én het verleden kijken.
De oneindigheid van het heelal
Zoals altijd begint zijn maakproces niet met een tekst of een concept, maar vanuit zijn interesses. Ditmaal dus de telescoop waarmee gezocht wordt naar onder andere de ‘kosmische dageraad’: het licht van de allereerste sterren die kort na de geboorte van het heelal ontstonden. Meer nog dan door de ontdekkingstocht die de gigantische telescoop maakt, is Meirhaeghe gefascineerd door het vermogen van de mens om met zijn gedachten boven zichzelf en het heelal uit te stijgen. De oneindigheid van het heelal is niet te bevatten, de wetenschap is zoekende, maar onze verbeelding is absoluut.
Muzikale ruimtereis
Als reisgezel op deze muzikale ruimtereis neemt hij de Italiaanse componist Caterina Barbieri mee. Ze maakt elektronische, ‘geestverruimende’ muziek. Op haar hypnotiserende ‘Fantas’ geven de performers, zangers en dansers zich over aan het onverklaarbare en onzegbare. Shelly Shonk Fiffit is zo een intense beeldende en muzikale trip door onze innerlijke wereld en langs de uithoeken van de kosmos.

Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe
Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe (1995) is contratenor, performer en regisseur van operateske en beeldende voorstellingen. In zijn creaties vermengt hij klassieke muziek met pop en hedendaagse scenografieën op een eigenwijze manier. Binnen zijn werk bouwt hij veelal verder op het klassieke repertoire samen met een diverse cast waarbij dansers zingen en zangers bewegen. Hij werkt vaak met niet klassiek geschoolde performers en tovert dansers om tot zangers, of omgekeerd. Het theater is voor hem een echokamer waarin oude en nieuwe tijden samengebracht kunnen worden. Hij is gefascineerd door de toekomst, en de evoluties en revoluties die daarmee gepaard gaan.

In his new show Shelly Shonk Fiffit, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe taps into a theme that is as unfathomable as the title: the cosmic. As always, Meirhaeghe does not begin with a text or clear-cut clear concept, but instead takes certain fascinations and a dynamic group of performers as his starting point.
On 25 December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope was launched. This infrared telescope is the largest and most sophisticated space telescope ever, allowing us to look far and deep into the universe, but also into the past. Among other things, Webb will search for the ‘cosmic dawn’: the light of the very first stars that formed shortly after the birth of the universe.
The infinity of the universe swallows us up, science searches but our imagination is absolute. What fascinates Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe even more than the discovery of this telescope is the capacity of human beings to rise above themselves and the universe in their thoughts. Their capacity for invention. In this show, Meirhaeghe links the high tech of a telescope to the primitiveness of handcraft and manual techniques.
Our travel companion on this trip beyond the boundaries of the body and time is the music of the Italian composer Caterina Barbieri. Barbieri makes electronic music that is potentially transformative and mind-expanding. To the sounds of the hypnotic Fantas (from the magisterial 2019 album Ecstatic Computation), the performers, singers and dancers give themselves over to the inexplicable and indescribable.
