Who still remembers The Go! Team? In the early noughties, this disorderly bunch was busy making catchy funk, noise pop and hip hop music. The band creates a mishmash that can be placed somewhere between the sampledelica of The Avalanches and the boundless enthusiasm of I’m from Barcelona. No wonder their records always guaranteed the smile you would only get on a party where they play one great track after another. There were worries that these madcaps would disappear off the radar after their ‘Rolling Blackouts’ was released four years ago and was largely ignored. Luckily, they now return with the successful ‘The Scene Between’ and they did not even have to go crazy. Sometimes carrying on with what you are doing is crazy enough.
There thus is no radical change of course from Ian Parton and his companions. Every song still sounds as if the whole band tumbles down the stairs. Whining guitars and drums and shamelessly catchy tunes: that is the mix The Go! Team effortlessly uses again on their fourth album, and for the listener it is a matter of trying to keep up. The Go! Team clearly aimed for our hearts but also our hips and they succeeded fantastically. On Sunday 10 April the memory will come true again as they perform in De Oosterpoort!

Wie herinnert zich The Go! Team nog? Dit zootje ongeregeld deed aan het begin van de noughties catchy dingen met funk, noisepop en hiphop. De groep brengt een mengelmoes die zich ergens tussen de sampledelica van The Avalanches en het niet aflatende enthousiasme van I’m from Barcelona bevindt. Hun platen stonden dan ook altijd garant voor een glimlach die je enkel krijgt wanneer op een feestje de ene na de andere top plaat wordt gedraaid. Er was wat onrust dat deze spring-in-‘t-veldjes van de radar zouden verdwijnen na het grotendeels genegeerde ‘Rolling Blackouts’ van vier jaar geleden. Gelukkig keren ze nu terug met het geslaagde ‘The Scene Between’, en daar hoefden ze duidelijk niet eens gekke toeren voor uit te halen. Soms is doorgaan waarmee je bezig bent al gek genoeg.
Er is dan ook geen radicale koerswijziging te bemerken bij Ian Parton en zijn kompanen. Ieder nummer klinkt nog altijd alsof de complete band van de trap dondert. Overstuurde gitaren en drums en schaamteloos aanstekelijke deuntjes: het is een mix waar The Go! Team ook op hun vierde plaat moeiteloos mee wegkomt, en voor de luisteraar is het een kwestie van dit proberen bij te benen. The Go! Team heeft duidelijk op ons hart én onze heupen gemikt, en daar zijn ze met grote onderscheiding in geslaagd. Op zondag 10 april wordt de herinnering weer werkelijkheid, want dan staan ze in De Oosterpoort!
”Successful moments shine through, like album opener “What’d You Say,” a buoyant pop morsel that feels appropriate on the edge of spring, and the lower-key instrumental interlude “Rolodex The Seasons.”
