Smoove & Turrell
Smoove & Turrell put uit de roemrijke soul, funk en disco uit de jaren zeventig en combineert dat met een modern soul-, hiphop-, jazz- en r&b-geluid dat we kennen van o.a. De la Soul, Gnarls Barkley en Outkast. Op 29 februari spelen ze in De Oosterpoort hun nieuwste album, dat boordevol swingende soul en funky geluid zit!
Sinds de lancering van hun debuutalbum Antique Soul in 2009 is de muzikale carrière van dj en producer Smoove (Jonathan Watson) en soulzanger John Turrell in een stroomversnelling geraakt en zijn ze niet meer weg te denken van de (festival)podia en radio. Het duo werd bijgestaan door een viertal topmuzikanten, die al gauw als volwaardige bandleden werden beschouwd. De groep, die een eigen variant op northern soul (zwoele Noord-Engelse soul van de jaren 60 en 70) brengt, speelde de afgelopen jaren onder meer op Glastonbury, Amsterdam Dance Event en Kendal Calling. Op het album Crown Posada, waar de hele band aan mee schreef, fuseerde Smoove & Turrell hun northern soul- en funkstijl met rock, pop, disco, jazz en elektronische invloeden. Dit doen ze zonder de iconische Smoove & Turrell sound te verliezen, die zelfs de meest moeilijke dansers gegarandeerd de voeten doen meetikken!
Smoove & Turrell draw from the glorious soul, funk and disco from the seventies and combine it with a modern soul, hip-hop, jazz and R & B sound we know from among others De la Soul, Gnarls Barkley, and Outkast. They will bring their newest album – brimming with swinging soul and funk – to De Oosterpoort on 29 February.
Since the launch of their 2009 debut album Antique Soul the musical career of DJ and producer Smoove (Jonathan Watson) and soul singer John Turrell has been accelerating and it is impossible to imagine the (festival) stages and radio without them. The duo is accompanied by a foursome of top musicians, who were quickly considered full members of the band. The group, bringing a unique variant of northern soul (sultry North-English sixties and seventies’ soul), played festivals such as Glastonbury, Amsterdam Dance Event, and Kendal Calling during the past few years. On the album Crown Posada, which the entire band wrote for, Smoove & Turrell fused their northern soul and funk style with rock, pop, disco, jazz, and electronic influences. They do so without losing the characteristic Smoove & Turrell sound, which will loosen up even the most-reluctant dancers!
