Passe-partout 9 & 10 maart

Brahms Weekend – Passe-partout
Brahms’s self-criticism is legendary: his chamber music especially was often the subject of his merciless disapproval. Beethoven had raised the standards to such a high level that many attempts had disappeared into the bin before Brahms himself waged an attempt in 1873 with the publication of two string quartets. The famous Jerusalem Quartet will for two days devote itself to Brahm’s chamber music in collaboration with a number of musical friends. Clarinettist Sharon Kam will take upon her the main part in the ‘Clarinet quintet op. 115’, and viola player Amihai Grosz – co-founder of the Jerusalem Quartet, but main chief of the violas of the Berliner Philhamoniker since 2010 – will join for a performance of ‘String quartet op. 111’. Come and listen to how to a genius unchained himself from the legacy of a giant and who – after Bach and Beethoven – evolved to be the third ‘big B’ of German classical music.

The concert on Saturday is organised in cooperation with the Groningsche Muziekvereeniging. On Sunday, Leo Samama will hold a lecture in between both concerts.
