The jazz and world-music influences still resound in this British singer-songwriter’s music
Nick Mulvey is een Engelse singer-songwriter die heel goed geluisterd heeft naar artiesten als Nick Drake en Steve Reich. Mede door zijn verleden als steeldrummer focust Mulvey zich vooral op meeslepende ritmes in zijn muziek. Zijn debuutalbum First Mind werd direct genomineerd voor een Mercury Music Prize. Wie naar Mulvey luistert hoort al gauw de Afrikaanse, Spaanse en Cubaanse invloeden in zijn muziek.
Jazz en wereldmuziek
Op 19-jarige leeftijd verhuist Mulvey naar Cuba om daar een muziekopleiding te volgen. Na deze afgerond te hebben studeerde hij ethnomusicology aan de School of Oriental and African Studies in Londen. In zijn voormalige jazzband The Portico Quartet bespeelde Nick de hang, een soort steel drums. Dit vertaald zich ook naar de rest van zijn spel: “I do the same things on the guitar that I did on the hang. It’s about repetition, hypnotic music, the groove.” Ook als soloartiest zijn de invloeden van jazz en wereldmuziek duidelijk te horen, maar zelf zegt Mulvey zijn stijl niet te veranderen: “I’m always drawn to the same principles in music. Beneath each genre, at a certain level, they hold the same principles”.

Prettig samenspel
Op zijn nieuwste werk zorgt het prettige samenspel tussen de warme klanken van de piano, contrabas en akoestische gitaar voor luchtigheid en zorgen de uptempo folkliedjes voor meer diepte en schwung. De droge bas, lichtvoetige ritmes en blijmoedige outro’s doen denken aan Paul Simon’s Graceland. 28 mei staat Nick Mulvey in de Nieuwe Kerk.
Nick Mulvey is an English singer-songwriter who listened to artists as Nick Drake and Steve Reich very carefully. Partly because of his experience as steel drummer, Mulvey particularly focuses on stirring rhythms in his music. His debut album First Mind was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize straight away. Those who listen to Mulvey will quickly discover the African, Spanish and Cuban influences in his music.
When he was 19 Mulvey moved to Cuba to study music. After graduating, he studied ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. In his former jazz band The Portico Quartet Nick played the hang, a kind of steel drums. This resounds in his other music: “I do the same things on the guitar that I did on the hang. It’s about repetition, hypnotic music, the groove.” Now that he is a solo artist, the jazz and world-music influences can still easily be pinpointed, but according to Mulvey he is not changing his style: “I’m always drawn to the same principles in music. Beneath each genre, at a certain level, they hold the same principles.”
On his most recent work the pleasant harmony between the warm sounds of the piano, contrabass and acoustic guitar provides light-heartedness whereas the up-tempo folk songs contribute to depth and energy. The dry bass, light rhythms and cheerful outros remind of Paul Simon’s Graceland. Nick Mulvey will play in the Nieuwe Kerk on 28 May.
