Izhar Elias, winnaar van de Nederlandse Muziekprijs, is een van de veelzijdigste gitaristen van dit moment. Tijdens dit concert speelt hij de akkoorden van La Folia, een van de oudste thema’s in de Europese muziek, en bloedmooie muziek van o.a. Boccherini, Rossini, Bizet, Schubert en Reich. Paul en Menno de Nooijer, wereldwijd bekend om hun stop-motion kunst, zorgen met projecties voor een intrigerend schouwspel waarbij echt en nep door elkaar lopen.

We zien een tempeltje. Of nou ja, tempeltje, het is bouwwerkje – ook wel folly genoemd – dat als decoratie werd neergezet in negentiende-eeuwse tuinen. Zo werd je als wandelaar als het ware voor de gek gehouden. Ook in De Folly weten we eigenlijk niet goed waar we naar kijken. Wat is echt en wat is nep? Je ziet en hoort meerdere gitaristen variaties spelen op het beroemde akkoordenschema van La Folia, maar welke gitarist is nu echt en welke een levensgrote projectie? Paul en Menno de Nooijer zorgen voor een verrassend spektakel met projecties en fotoanimaties. Maar wanneer gaan de foto’s over in video of in realiteit?

Izhar Elias, winner of the Nederlandse Muziekprijs (Dutch Music Award), is one of the most versatile guitarists of today. During this concert he plays variations of La Folia, one of the oldest themes in European music, and stunning musical compositions by Boccherini, Rossini, Bizet, Schubert and Reich, among others. Paul and Menno de Nooijer, known all over the world for their stop-motion art, use projections to create an intriguing spectacle, blurring the borders between wat is real and what is not. An intriguing mix of music and visuals about real truths and fake art. And vice versa.
We see a small temple. But is it really a temple? On closer acquaintance, what looked like a temple is in actuality a folly, a purely decorative edifice, often found in nineteenth-century gardens. As a passerby, you are, momentarily, fooled. While watching De Folly you’re also never really sure what you are looking at. What is real and what is fake? You see and hear several guitarists playing variations on the famous ancient theme from La Folia, but which guitarist is real and which one is merely a life-size projection? Paul and Menno de Nooijer provide a surprising spectacle with projections and photo animations. But when do images become reality?
