Dmitri Sjostakovitsj componeerde in 1951 in navolging van Bachs Wohltemperierte Klavier een serie van 24 Préludes en fuga’s in alle toonsoorten. Pianist Hannes Minnaar zette de reeks in 2022 op een uitstekend ontvangen cd, maar eigenlijk moet je dit monument uit de pianoliteratuur live in de concertzaal horen. In een soort minimarathon voor pianisten neemt Minnaar je mee naar de wonderlijke muzikale wereld van Sjostakovitsj.
Het verhaal gaat dat Sjostakovitsj zich liet inspireren toen hij in 1950 als jurylid van het Internationaal Bachconcours in Leipzig hoorde hoe de 26-jarige Russische pianiste Tatjana Nikolayeva alle preludes en fuga’s van Bach uit het hoofd speelde. Zijn bewondering uitte hij door zelf een cyclus te schrijven, 24 juweeltjes die voortdurend van toon en sfeer veranderen, van bespiegelend tot speels, van weemoedig tot wrang.
Ga er maar aan staan: een 150 minuten durend, technisch gezien pittig werk live in de concertzaal spelen. Weinig pianisten durven het, Hannes Minnaar stroopt de mouwen op en gaat ervoor. Zijn vertolkingen van Bachs Goldbergvariaties leverden hem wereldwijd onderscheidingen op en ook nu laat Minnaar zien dat hij zonder enige twijfel een van de toonaangevende musici van onze tijd is.

Pianist Hannes Minnaar put the series on an excellently received CD in 2022, but really you need to hear this monument of piano literature live in the concert hall. In a sort of mini-marathon for pianists, Minnaar takes you into the wonderful musical world of Shostakovich.
The story goes that Sjostakovitsj was inspired when, as a jury member at the International Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950, he heard 26-year-old Russian pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva play all of Bach’s preludes and fugues by heart. He expressed his admiration by writing his own cycle, 24 gems that constantly change in tone and atmosphere, from contemplative to playful, from wistful to wry.
Just think about it: playing a – if uninterrupted – 150-minute complex work live in the concert hall. Few pianists dare, Hannes Minnaar will do it. His interpretations of Bach’s Goldberg Variations lived up to them worldwide accolades, and once again Minnaar shows that he is without a doubt one of the leading musicians of our time.
