NRC Handelsblad ★★★★★

If there is something as ‘the pianist’, his name would be Grigory Sokolov. He has completely dedicated his life to music. He sleeps only three or four hours each night, leads a secluded life, rarely gives interviews, is averse to sensationalism and marketing campaigns, and is strictly vegetarian. He thinks rehearsing with orchestras or recording albums are a waste of time. An extraordinary and independent spirit, who seems to be from another planet. A planet with unbelievably musical beauty, that is. This uncompromising dedication resounds in Sokolov’s recitals, which usually take place in the greatest and fanciest concert venues around the world. “You can look for happiness in traveling, spiritual trips, or books. Or you can attend a recital by this Russian master pianist. An evening of Sokolov serves as trip replacement, because his music-making is an adventure of and for the mind. You must not miss Sokolov,” said national newspaper NRC Handelsblad about one of his previous concerts. The Russian will celebrate his seventieth birthday with some recitals in the Netherlands. The programme will depend upon his inspiration of the moment.

“The phenomenal Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov towers above his colleagues so high his magical play is of a godly calibre.”
