Garrett T. Capps en zijn band NASA Country geven net als Willie, Waylon, Kacey Musgraves en vele Texanen voor hen een eigen draai aan de klassieke country traditie.
Op de plaat People Are Beautiful (2022) spelen de uit San Antonio afkomstige Capps en zijn band met synthesizers en krautrock-stijlen, maar wat het album echt bijzonder maakt is de gevoeligheid van Capps. Hij zingt over politiek, paranoia en de duisternis van onze tijd, maar het wordt allemaal verlicht omdat hij zo’n grappige en positieve vent is. Als je met je band lekkere cosmic country wil spelen, helpt het als je zo buitenaards en heerlijk vreemd bent als Garrett T. Capps.
Je hebt vast wel eens de uitdrukking ‘Don’t Mess With Texas’ gehoord. Nou, Garrett T. Capps gaat hier maar al te graag tegenin. Capps beschrijft zichzelf als “San Antonio’s resident cosmic country gonzo honky tonk weirdo freak”. In Rolling Stone werd hij in dikgedrukte letters aangekondigd als: “Meet the Texas Weirdo Mixing Kraftwerk with Doug Sahm to Create ‘Kraut Country’.”

De ambities van Hunter Pinkston, voormalig punker en countryliedjessmid, voor het tweede album van zijn band The Pink Stones, logen er niet om. “Op deze plaat probeer ik alles waar ik als luisteraar en speler van hou samen te bundelen, zonder dat het willekeurig klinkt.” Gelukt! Op het eerste oor hoor je virtuoze country, maar tussen alle pedal steel snikken, two- twangy harmonieën en teksten over gebroken harten en lange dagen op de weg poppen overal onverwachte stilistische uitstapjes op naar gospel, soul, psych en dub. En toch hoor je vooral… The Pink Stones. Muziek voor iedereen die van Poco en The Flying Burrito Brothers houdt, maar toch geheel van deze tijd is.

On last year’s People Are Beautiful – the San Antonio native and his band mix twang with synthesizers and a krautrock pulse, but what really sets it apart is Capps’s sensibility. He sings about politics, paranoia, and the darkness of our times, but it’s all lightened because he’s a funny and positive dude. If you’re going to kick out the jams on cosmic country, it helps if you’re as cosmically, wonderfully weird as Capps.
