Choir of St John’s College Cambridge behoort tot de top van de Engelse koortraditie, die op zichzelf al uniek en wereldwijd geliefd is. Sinds de oprichting in 1670 zingt het koor tijdens de schooltermijn dagelijks in de prachtige Gilbert Scott-kapel van het St John’s College. Ruim 350 jaar was het ‘boys only’ maar sinds 2022 zijn – gelukkig – ook meisjes welkom bij het oeroude Britse instituut.
Tijdens dit speciaal voor kerst samengestelde programma hoor je tijdloze klassiekers zoals O Holy Night van Adolphe Adam, het serene Ave Maria van renaissancemeester Robert Parsons, de verstilde schoonheid van Hymn to the Virgin, geschreven door de jonge Benjamin Britten op slechts zestienjarige leeftijd en het sprankelende Gloria in excelsis Deo van de hedendaagse componist Jonathan Dove. Zo kan Kerstmis dus óók klinken.

Choir of St John’s College Cambridge is among the pinnacle of the English choral tradition, which in itself is unique and loved worldwide. Since its founding in 1670, the choir has sung daily during the school term in the magnificent Gilbert Scott Chapel of St John’s College. For over 350 years it was “boys only” but since 2022 – fortunately – girls have been welcome at the ancient British institution as well.
During this Christmas program you will hear timeless classics such as O Holy Night by Adolphe Adam, the serene Ave Maria by Renaissance master Robert Parsons, the tranquil beauty of Hymn to the Virgin, written by the young Benjamin Britten at only sixteen years of age and the sparkling Gloria in excelsis Deo by contemporary composer Jonathan Dove. So Christmas can sound like that, too.
