Hartverwarmende verhalen van reisfotograaf
“Art could not be quieter, simpler or more beautiful” was de kop van een Britse recensie. Wellicht kent u het woord flipboek niet, terwijl u er vrijwel zeker weleens een in handen heeft gehad. In een flipboek staat op iedere bladzijde een tekening, waarbij een filmpje ontstaat als u de pagina’s snel door uw vingers laat ratelen. Reisfotograaf Volker Gerling maakt zulke boekjes, niet met tekeningen maar met portretfoto’s. Hij wandelde sinds 2003 maar liefst 3.500 kilometer kriskras door Duitsland, onderweg mensen uitnodigend om zijn ‘flipbook cinema’ te bekijken. In ‘Portraits in Motion’ toont Gerling een selectie van zijn favoriete flipboeken via een videocamera, die de beelden uitvergroot op een scherm. Hij vertelt daarbij de ontroerende, grappige en verrassende verhalen die horen bij de mensen die hij portretteerde. Volker Gerling won er tijdens Edinburgh Fringe Festival de Total Theatre Award voor vernieuwende voorstellingen mee. The Times was erbij: “His show is uniquely heart-warming.”

Volker Gerling about his performance: “The 36 images that my films are made of would run by in one and a half seconds of ordinary cinema, but in a flipbook movie they can be repeated at will. In this form, these pictures gain their own power and poetry. People I photograph usually do not know that I will not take only one picture but will actually shoot a whole analogue film in just twelve seconds. Reacting to the camera in action, people abandon the poses they first assumed. They react spontaneously. These moments are the essence of my work. On stage, I use a video camera to project my movies onto a big screen. The people in my flipbooks come to life. I tell their stories and tell of my own encounters. My show is a gentle and thoughtful reflection about the fleeting nature of the moment and what it means when people meet each other.”
