We vallen maar gelijk met de deur in huis: een betere akoestische gitarist dan Tommy Emmanuel kom je niet snel tegen op deze planeet. Met zijn unieke fingerpicking style en zijn innovatieve mix van jazz, blues, country en klassieke/Spaanse invloeden heeft hij een grote schare fans opgebouwd en speelt hij wereldwijd jaarlijks honderden shows voor uitverkochte zalen. In augustus komt het Australische gitaarfenomeen voor drie shows naar Nederland, waaronder één in De Oosterpoort.
Tommy Emmanuel heeft het gelijktijdig spelen van bassen, akkoorden en melodieën bijna tot in het absurde doorgevoerd. Luister bijvoorbeeld eens naar zijn waanzinnig knappe uitvoering van Day Tripper. Je zou denken dat daar twee of misschien wel drie gitaristen aan het werk zijn, maar Emmanuel speelt het allemaal in z’n eentje klaar. Tegelijk stralen zijn liedjes ondanks de soms vliegende virtuositeit een opmerkelijke rust uit. Denk aan Angelina, een prachtige ode aan zijn dochter, of Lewis & Clark, nummers die te horen zijn op het vorig jaar verschenen The Best of Tommysongs, een album met zijn beste eigen songs van de afgelopen dertig jaar.
Niet voor niets werkte Emmanuel samen met supersterren als Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Mark Knopfler, Jason Isbell en vele anderen. Gedenkwaardig is het album The Day The Fingerpickers Took Over the World, dat hij in 1997 opnam met gitaarlegende Chet Atkins. Tel daarbij op het aanstekelijke spelplezier waarmee Emmanuel alle multidimensionale arrangementen feilloos uit zijn akoestische gitaar laat spatten en je snapt waarom hij behangen is met prijzen. Wellicht de mooiste daarvan viel hem in 1999 ten deel, toen hij uit handen van idool Chet Atkins ‘s werelds grootste onderscheiding op gitaargebied ontving, de C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player) Award.

It is quite a statement to make, and we don’t make it lightly: a better acoustic guitar player than Tommy Emmanuel is hard to find. Over the years Emmanuel collaborated with superstars such as Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins. His innovative mix of jazz, blues, country and classic Spanish influences has attracted a broad and loyal fanbase. Yet it is his extraordinary guitar playing skills that make him one of a kind. Who else but a true magician, when playing Day Tripper by the Beatles, can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar?
Despite his awe-inspiring virtuosity and dexterity, his songs never feel rushed or frenetic. Emmanuel thoughtfully delivers every nuance, each turn of phrase, playing lyrical melodies that go right to the heart. Take, for instance, his beautiful ode to his daughter, Angelina, or Lewis & Clark. Both songs are featured on his 2020 double album The Best of Tommysongs, a compilation of his best works from the past thirty years.
Emmanuel has played for sold-out performances all across the world. This August the Australian guitar legend will be gracing De Oosterpoort with his presence.
