De Oosterpoort zal op 24 november tintelen van muzikale anarchie als The Breeders, de band rond Kim Deal, Groningen aandoet. De zangeres en gitariste verliet begin jaren negentig de legendarische Pixies om met haar band een jaar later met het meesterlijke en legendarische album ‘Last Splash’ wereldwijd door te breken. Topper is de doordansnachthit ‘Cannonball’, door Rolling Stone op nummer 12 gezet van beste nummers uit de nineties.
Rock-‘n-roll leven
Het album vol charmante en speelse songs bracht de Amerikaanse alt-rock band niet alleen faam, maar ook een hoop ellende met drank en vooral drugs. Na een wereldtournee in 1992 – waarbij onder andere Glastonbury en Pinkpop werd aangedaan – en optredens in het voorprogramma van Nirvana, overleefden enkele bandleden het succes ternauwernood. Enkel door een flinke tijd uit het rock-’n-roll leven te stappen.
Expectations are a bitch
“Expectations are a bitch”, schreef OOR naar aanleiding van de van het feit dat de groep twintig jaar na het succes van ‘Last Splash’ in de originele bezetting en een stuk cleaner weer bij elkaar kwam. De verwachtingen worden echter volledig waargemaakt, ja zelfs overtroffen, zo bewijst het onlangs verschenen album ‘All Nerve’. De spirit van de nineties is helemaal terug en de rockhelden leveren een spannende, dwingende en swingende plaat af. Het messcherpe ‘Archangel’s Thunderbird’ heeft daarbij de potentie het ‘Cannonball’ van dit decennium worden.
Onbevangen sfeer
Net als op de album heerst er bij de liveoptredens van Kim Deal, haar zus Kelley (gitaar/zang), bassist Josephine Wiggs en drummer Jim Macpherson een onbevangen sfeer: lekker rommeligheid, superaanstekelijk en ongepolijst. Power en elegantie vechten om voorrang en ondertussen rocken de songs stevig door.“‘All Nerve’,” their excellent fifth album, shows the timelessness of good art.” (The New Yorker)

On November 24 De Oosterpoort will be tinkling with musical anarchy when The Breeders, Kim Deal’s band, will be in Groningen. In the early nineties the singer and guitarist left the legendary Pixies to break through worldwide a year later with the masterly and legendary album ‘Last Splash’. Highlight is the dancing-through-the-night hit ‘Cannonball’, which was the 12th best track of the nineties according to Rolling Stone.
Rock-‘n-roll life
The album filled with charming and playful tracks not only brought the American alt-rock band fame, but also a lot of misery with alcohol and mainly drugs. After a world tour in 1992 – with among others performances on Glastonbury and Pinkpop – and being supporting act to Nirvana, some band members only barely survived the success. The only solution was to leave the rock-‘n-roll life behind for a fair amount of time.
Expectations are a bitch
“Expectations are a bitch”, wrote OOR when the band returned in its original line-up a lot cleaner twenty years after the success of ‘Last Splash’. The expectations however were fully met, excelled even, as the recently released album ‘All Nerve’ proved. The nineties’ spirit is back and the rock heroes delivered an exciting, compelling, and swinging album. Furthermore, the razor-sharp ‘Archangel’s Thunderbird’ has the potential to become the ‘Cannonball’ of this decade.
Open atmosphere
As is the album, the live performances by Kim Deal, her sister Kelley (guitar/vocals), bassist Josephine Wiggs, and drummer Jim Macpherson are characterised by an open atmosphere: pleasantly messy, very catchy, and unpolished.
