Do you know the 2012 movie Big Easy Express? The documentary shows how Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s, Mumford & Sons and The Old Crow Medicine Show travel together in a train from San Francisco to New Orleans, with many musical happenings. What pass the revue are of course the performances, but more important are the jam sessions and the musical ideas that come to life on the road. In 2014 a similar film was released, this time with Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff and Bear’s Den in the lead roles. In the film the four bands are followed during their trip with five Volkswagen vans from Austin to Boston (the movie is called Austin to Boston for a reason). And it is no other than Nathaniel Rateliff who we are receiving in De Oosterpoort this February. The atmosphere of the performance will be shaped by the character of these similar artists, whom live in freedom and can completely lose themselves in the music.
Nathaniel Rateliff follows in the footsteps of travel companion Bear’s Den, who will already perform in De Oosterpoort on October 14th. Rateliff will bring his own band, The Night Sweats. With this band Rateliff makes more up-tempo soul and rhythm & blues than his previous folk music. Together these musicians guarantee inciting live shows, which they will prove in the Kleine Zaal. Have you become enthusiastic yet? After watching this movie the urge to experience this will be even bigger! Wat aan bod komt zijn natuurlijk de optredens, maar nog veel belangrijker zijn de jamsessies en de muzikale ideeën die onderweg naar voren gebracht worden. In 2014 is er nog zo’n zelfde soort film uitgekomen, met dit keer Ben Howard, The Staves, Nathaniel Rateliff en Bear’s Den in de hoofdrol. In de film worden de vier bands gevolgd tijdens hun reis met vijf Volkswagenbusjes van Austin naar Boston (de film heet dan ook niet voor niets Austin to Boston). En laat het nu net zo zijn dat wij in februari Nathaniel Rateliff mogen verwelkomen in De Oosterpoort. De sfeer tijdens het optreden zal worden bepaald door het karakter van deze vergelijkbare artiesten, die leven in vrijheid en volledig kunnen opgaan in de muziek.
Nathaniel Rateliff treedt met zijn concert hier in de voetsporen van reisgenoot Bear’s Den, die op 14 oktober al in De Oosterpoort stond. Rateliff zal zelf een band meebrengen, namelijk The Night Sweats. Met deze band maakt Rateliff meer up-tempo soul en rhythm & blues dan de daaraan voorafgaande folkmuziek. Samen staan de muzikanten garant voor opzwepende live-shows, wat ze in de Kleine Zaal zullen bewijzen. Al enthousiast geworden? Na het bekijken van de film is de drang om dit mee te maken nog groter! Het éénmans vuilnisbakkenorkest van Reverend Deadeye heeft zich gespecialiseerd in basale Deltablues, ranzige garage en schuimende rock ‘n’ roll met christelijke teksten. Deze domineeszoon lijkt het net zo serieus te nemen als David Eugene Edwards (Woven Hand, 16 Horsepower). Beiden zijn even fanatiek in wat ze doen. Als one-man rock ‘n’ gospelband roert hij zijn gemodificeerde gitaar, zelfgemaakte bierblik-microfoon en wastobbe drums tot er een punkrock versie van delta-blues uit komt. Op het nieuwe album ‘The Good Reverend’ speelt Alex Herbert (aka Brother Al) op drums.
