“Cello-icoon laat zijn cello fluisteren, snikken, uithalen en wegdromen” (Klassieke Zaken)
Een van de hoogtepunten van de tweede helft van ons klassiek muziekseizoen is de komst van cello-icoon Mischa Maisky. In 1966 won de in Letland geboren Maisky op achttienjarige leeftijd het beroemde Tsjaikovski Concours in Moskou.
In januari 2013 wordt Maisky 65 jaar en viert dat een paar maanden later met de Groningse klassieke muziekliefhebbers. Op het programma staat onder anderen het wonderschone ‘Kol Nidrei’. Dit van oorsprong Hebreeuws gebed werd in 1880 door de Duitse componist Max Bruch omgezet in een reeks variaties voor cello en orkest. Verder brengt hij de ‘Rococo-variaties’, waarin Tsjaikovski een Mozart-achtig thema met een smaakvol romantisch sausje overgiet. “Eindelijk weer eens muziek!”, jubelde Franz Liszt toen hij het werk voor het eerste hoorde. Mooi is ook het ‘Celloconcert’ dat de Israëlische componist Benjamin Yusupov in 2007 voltooide. Maisky wordt tijdens dit concert – het enige dit seizoen van hem in Nederland – bijgestaan door het Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Celllo-icon lets his cello whistle, sob, eviscerate and dream away One of the highlights of the second half of our classical music season is Mischa Maisky, the cello –icon, performing in The Oosterpoort. In 1966 Maisky, born in Latvia, won the famous Tsjaikovski Concours in Moscow at the age of eighteen.In January 2013 Maisky will turn 65 and he will celebrate this a couple of months later with classical music fans from Groningen. ‘Kol Nidrei’ is one of the pieces on the program. This piece, which was originally a Hebrew prayer, was turned into a series of variations for cello and orchestra. Maisky will also play the ‘Rococo-variations’ in which Tsjaikovski gives a romantic feel to Mozart like theme. “Finally some music!” Franz List exulted when he heard the piece for the first time. The ‘Celloconcert ‘, written by the Israeli composer Benjamin Yusupov ,is also beautiful . Maisky will be supported by the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra during the concert.
