After an impressive international jazz career, pianist and composer Michiel Borstlap took a different route on ‘Velvet’: the route of minimal music. The album subsequently was nominated for the Edison Public Award 2017. He kept to this path on his new album ‘Georg’. Less notes, more emotion, and a leading part for his first piano, a 100-year-old model with an eccentric, mature sound, that will come along to De Oosterpoort.

Georg
Last year, Michiel Borstlap decided he only wanted to keep playing ‘Georg’. Georg is his first piano, which he started playing as a ten-year-old boy. An instrument from 1912, found by his mother in a deserted military barracks. According to Borstlap, Georg is not just any piano. “He sounds very mature. When you strike a key, there is so much more than just that one note, another sound is floating in the distance. And you hear all kinds of tapping and creaking. A tuner once proposed to mend him, but I do not want that. It is the flaws that make it so very beautiful.”

Honest music
Borstlap has been applying this minimalism to the rest of his life too. His extravagant life with performances all around the world made room for the sense and emotion behind the music. The pianist experiences a huge increase in interest in and popularity of this honest music. He regularly performs experience concerts at his house. During these concerts, Borstlap feels the audience relaxing and letting go. And that is exactly what he aims for.
