Malford Milligan & The Southern Aces
Door zijn krachtige, hese stem en zijn indrukwekkende voorkomen wordt Malford Milligan vaak vergeleken met beroemde souliconen van weleer. Zo schreef AltCountry: “Als Milligan zijn mond opendoet dan vraag je je even af of Otis Redding weer onder de levenden is. Of Eddie Hinton. Of Solomon Burke.” In november 2021 was hij een van de smaakmakers op de downtown-editie van TakeRoot. Alle reden dus om hem terug te halen naar De Oosterpoort.
Milligan groeide als zwarte albino op in een gesegregeerd Texas, waar hij zijn stem vond in de soul en blues. Over de raciale kwesties en de uitsluiting die hij ervoer gedurende zijn jeugd sprak hij zich nooit openlijk uit, maar de opkomst van Black Lives Matter legde pijnlijke herinneringen bloot. Op zijn meest recente album I Was A Witness en tijdens de gelijknamige tour deelt Milligan deze verhalen met het publiek. “Verpletterend mooi.” (Bluestown Music)

Thanks to his powerful, husky voice and impressive stage presence, Malford Milligan is often compared to famous soul icons of yesteryear. As Dutch website AltCountry wrote: “When Milligan opens his mouth, it makes you wonder if late Otis Redding is walking amongst us again. Or Eddie Hinton. Or Solomon Burke.” In November 2021, Milligan was one of the highlights on the downtown edition of TakeRoot. Reason enough to welcome him back to De Oosterpoort.
Milligan grew up as a black albino boy in segregated Texas, where he found his voice in soul and blues. He never spoke openly about the racial issues and exclusion he experienced during his childhood, but the rise of Black Lives Matter made him revisit these painful memories through his music.
