Kaia Kater
Kaia Kater’s muziek bestaat uit dialogen met historische figuren en meditaties op haar eigen moderne leven. Kater is een jonge songwriter, banjospeler en bandleider en heeft drie succesvolle albums en een NPR Tiny Desk op haar naam. Ondanks dat voelde ze de druk en worstelde ze met de verwachtingen van haar genre, americana. Kater ging eerst naar de filmschool om compositie te leren, daarna dook ze dieper in haar songwriting om met haar meest persoonlijke album tot nu toe te komen. “Ik hield in mijn liedjes schrijven rekening met de perceptie van anderen,” zegt ze. “Zou ik eerlijker schrijven als ik wist dat niemand dit ooit zou horen?”. Met dat in haar achterhoofd trok Kater zich terug in haar appartement in Montreal.
Het was een lange weg vanaf de slaapkameropnames op gitaar en banjo waar deze liedjes uit voortkwamen, maar met zulke omhullende arrangementen klinken de liedjes van Kater op Strange Medicine met een persoonlijke waarheid. In 2020 nam Kaia deel aan de Slaight Music Residency in het Canadian Film Center, waar ze originele muziek schreef voor The Porter (BET+ 2022), waarvoor ze een Canadian Screen Award won. Ze schreef en speelde ook muziek voor de nieuwe film, My Dead Friend Zoe (maart 2024).

Kaia Kater’s music consists of dialogues with historical figures and meditations on her own modern life. A young songwriter, banjo player and bandleader, Kater has three successful albums and an NPR Tiny Desk to her name. Despite that, she felt the pressure and struggled with the expectations of her genre, americana. Kater first went to film school to learn composition, then dove deeper into her songwriting to come up with her most personal album to date. “In my songwriting, I took into account other people’s perceptions,” she says. “Would I write more honestly if I knew no one would ever hear this?” With that in mind, Kater retreated to her Montreal apartment.
It was a long road from the bedroom recordings on guitar and banjo from which these songs emerged, but with such enveloping arrangements, Kater’s songs on Strange Medicine sound with a personal truth. In 2020, Kaia participated in the Slaight Music Residency at the Canadian Film Center, where she wrote original music for The Porter (BET+ 2022), for which she won a Canadian Screen Award. She also wrote and performed music for the new film, My Dead Friend Zoe (March 2024).
