An ode to resilience
Introdans zet het werk van de toonaangevende Vlaams-Marokkaanse choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in de spotlights met het avondvullende programma LARBI; een verkenningstocht van Cherkaoui’s signatuur en een ijzersterke ode aan veerkracht. De avond bevat de gewaardeerde balletten Fall en In Memoriam en het gloednieuwe inclusieve duet Residence. De drie choreografieën vormen een krachtig geheel en tonen Cherkaoui’s unieke signatuur; poëtisch, muzikaal, intens en diep menselijk.
Het nieuwe stuk Residence, dat de choreograaf voor en met de Schotse dansers en choreografen Marc Brew en Nelson Parrish Earl creëerde, beleeft haar wereldpremière met de tournee van LARBI. Cherkaoui werkte eerder samen met Marc Brew, wiens leven radicaal veranderde na een tragisch auto-ongeluk. Toen creëerden ze de indrukwekkende solo an Accident / a Life, waarin Brew op eigen wijze zijn veerkracht toonde. In Residence staat de relatie tot een ander centraal; hoe deel je ruimte, hoe bouw je samen een veilige plek, een thuis? Een ontroerende ontmoeting waarin wederkerigheid, vertrouwen en aanpassing centraal staan.
Het intieme duet wordt omlijst door de monumentale balletten Fall en In Memoriam. Eerstgenoemde is een werk met vederlichte duetten en groepsstukken van formaat, een viering van pure dans op meditatieve muziek van Arvo Pärt. In Memoriam is een hedendaags meesterwerk over verlies en herinnering, een eerbetoon aan de voorouders van de choreograaf.
Introdans places the work of leading Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in the spotlight with the full-length programme LARBI; an exploration of Cherkaoui’s distinctive signature and a powerful ode to resilience. The evening features the acclaimed ballets Falland In Memoriam, alongside the brand-new inclusive duet Residence. Together, these three choreographies form a compelling whole and reveal Cherkaoui’s unique voice: poetic, musical, intense, and deeply human.
The new work Residence, created by the choreographer for and with Scottish dancers and choreographers Marc Brew and Nelson Parrish Earl, has its world premiere during the LARBI tour. Cherkaoui previously collaborated with Marc Brew, whose life changed radically after a tragic car accident. Together they created the impressive solo an Accident / a Life, in which Brew expressed his resilience in his own distinctive way. In Residence, the relationship with another person takes centre stage: how do you share space, how do you build a safe place together, a home? A moving encounter in which reciprocity, trust, and adaptation are key.This intimate duet is framed by the monumental ballets Falland In Memoriam. The firstis a work of feather-light duets and large-scale group pieces, a celebration of pure dance set to the meditative music of Arvo Pärt. In Memoriamis a contemporary masterpiece about loss and remembrance, a tribute to the choreographer’s ancestors.

Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui excels like no other in capturing charged themes such as otherness, collectivity, the search for identity, faith, and desire in powerful narratives, expressed through a poetic and often hypnotic dance style. He brings together a wide range of dance forms in his work. Cherkaoui’s creations are internationally acclaimed; he works with renowned dance companies and theatres around the world, and celebrities such as Beyoncé and Madonna also like tocollaborating with this leading choreographer.
