Hamon Martin Quintet in English

Hamon Martin Quintet in English

Like Ireland and Scotland, Brittany has a Celtic background and a rich and lively musical tradition. The Scottish and the Irish like to perform and enjoy their music in the pub, whereas the Bretons do this during the open-air feast Fest Noz: an evening full of live music, dance, food and drinks.

Most villages and cities in Breizh (Breton for Brittany) honour this tradition and, like in Ireland and Scotland, both young and old are familiar with the music as well as the appropriate dances. These dances usually are group dances: social events that are relatively easy to join. Their origin often lies in for example working on the land and you can still see the patterns of sowing and harvesting. Of course these dances, which indeed have fine names as Andro, Bourrée, Branle, Gavotte, Plinn and Rondeau, need music.

One of the leading and most interesting representatives of the Breton folk scene is the Hamon Martin Quintet. This band is considered the reference for this festive and swinging dance music. These five Bretons have been inspired by the Fest Noz music from their area (Haut Brittany) for over ten years and they transformed this tradition into something modern and very danceable. The band mixes the infectious Breton music with Arabic and Indian influences, unexpected improvised changes in melody and surprising rhythmic patterns. Singer and caller Mathieu Hamon is assisted by Janick Martin (diatonic accordion), Erwan Hamon (bombard, transverse flute), Ronan Pellen (strings) and Erwan Volant (bass). And, of course you may dance!
