Beethovens cellosonates
Twee grootheden van de Franse muziekwereld komen naar Groningen voor een huzarenstukje: cellist Gautier Capuçon en pianist Frank Braley brengen op zondag 17 maart op één avond de vijf cellosonates van Beethoven.
Slechts een relatief klein deel van Beethovens oeuvre bestaat uit werken voor cello en piano, maar de vijf die hij componeerde zijn voor iedere cellist een absolute must. De cellosonates omspannen een half componistenleven. De eerste twee schreef hij voor de briljante cellobroers Jean-Pierre en Jean-Louis Duport. Bij de derde sonate was Beethoven al zo goed als doof, de laatste twee markeren zijn latere periode: spiritueler, donkerder en dramatischer. In Beethovens tijd waren die sonates uiterst vernieuwend en nog steeds is het overrompelende muziek. Zeker als die gespeeld wordt door deze bijzondere muzikanten, die deze sonates al jarenlang op het repertoire hebben staan en ze in 2016 op een meermaals geprezen album hebben vastgelegd.

Two major league players of the French music world are coming to Groningen for a daring performance: cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Frank Braley will perform all of Beethoven’s five cello sonatas in one sitting on Sunday 17 March.
Only a relatively small part of Beethoven’s oeuvre consists of works for cello and piano, but the five he composed are important touchstones for any cellist. The cello sonatas span half the composer’s life. He wrote the first two for the brilliant cello brothers Jean-Pierre and Jean-Louis Duport. Beethoven was almost deaf by the time he composed his third sonata, the last two mark his later period: more spiritual, darker and more dramatic.
In Beethoven’s time these sonatas were extremely innovative and the music still overwhelms. Especially when it is played by these special musicians, who have had these sonatas in their repertoire for years and recorded them on their multi-acclaimed album in 2016.
