De wereldberoemde folkzanger Don McLean, o.a. bekend van de evergreen American Pie, komt op woensdag 10 oktober naar De Oosterpoort met zijn ‘Botanical Gardens’ tour.
American Pie
In 1971 brak Don McLean door met het nummer American Pie. Deze nummer één hit wordt alom gezien als een van de meest belangrijke nummers van de 20e eeuw. McLean haalde na zijn grote doorbraak nogmaals de hitlijsten met het nummer Vincent, een eerbetoon aan Vincent van Gogh, en de singles Crying, Castles In The Air en Since I Don’t Have You.
Invloed in de muziekindustrie
De impact van Don McLean is echter niet alleen te zien in de grote hoeveelheid hitnummers die hij heeft geschreven. De singer-songwriter heeft ook een immense invloed gehad op anderen in de muziekindustrie. Zo hebben onder andere Madonna, Fred Astaire en Elvis Presley een eerbetoon gebracht aan de singer-songwriter, door een van zijn platen te coveren. Ook diende zijn muziek als grote inspiratie voor nummers als ‘I Wish I Could Yodel’ van Johnny Cash en ‘Killing Me Softly’ van Roberta Flack. Zijn succes zorgde ervoor dat hij in 2004 werd opgenomen in de “Song Writers Hall of Fame” in New York.
Botanical Gardens
Zijn nieuwste album ‘Botanical Gardens’ verscheen in maart dit jaar. Het album is naar eigen zeggen een van McLean’s meest reflectieve albums tot nu toe en bestaat uit persoonlijke nummers die terugkijken op zijn leven. ‘Botanical Gardens’ zit vol met tijdloze liedjes met een country, folk en Americana sound.

World-famous folk singer Don McLean, known for hits as the evergreen American Pie, will bring his ‘Botanical Gardens’ tour to De Oosterpoort on Wednesday 10 October.
American Pie
Don McLean broke through in 1971 with the song American Pie. This number-one hit is generally considered one of the most important songs of the 20th century. After his major breakthrough, McLean entered the charts again with the song Vincent, a homage to Vincent van Gogh, as well as with the singles Crying, Castles In The Air, and Since I Don’t Have You.
Influence on the music industry
Don McLean’s impact can not only be inferred from the great amount of hit songs he wrote. The singer-songwriter also had immense influence on others in the music industry. Among others Madonna, Fred Astaire, and Elvis Presley honoured him by covering one of his tracks.
