Andrew Combs

Willie Watson

‘’There’s so much beauty in this old music, and it affects me on a deep level. It moves me and inspires me.’’

Albumrecensie Canyons of my Mind (de Volkskrant)

A surprising TakeRoot presents concert, for on Saturday 2 February Andrew Combs and Willie Watson share the stage to charm the audience with fine guitar sounds, novelty classic folk, and influences from the Appalachians.

Andrew Combs
Last year, Andrew Combs performed during TakeRoot; according to many one of the best shows of the festival. Andrew Combs made his debut in 2012 with an album filled with wonderful country songs sang straight from the heart. The singer-songwriter from Dallas, Texas, flourished with each album and reached the general public with his most-recent Canyons of My Mind. National newspaper De Volkskrant awarded the album with no less than four out of five stars and wrote: “Not a cheerful album, but such a beauty, such fine melancholic vocals, and such classy string arrangements.” Combs wanders away from classic country towards poppy influences: from Conor Oberts, Jim Croce, and Sturgill Simpson to Harry Nilsson and even a little Elton John. He will be back in Groningen in February to present this new sound.

Willie Watson
Willie Watson became known as founder of the Old Crow Medicine Show, of which he was a member until 2011. Composed of musicians from different American states, that formation breathed new life into traditional folk, bluegrass, and other Mountain music with their rocking attitude. Yet Watson decided to continue as solo artist and makes himself known as a true revival man. The 2014 debut album Folksinger Vol. 1 received praising reviews and appeared to be the start of a successful solo career. Watson released his second solo album Folksinger Vol. 2, produced by David Rawlings, in September 2017. The tracks on this album were made famous previously by artists as Leadbelly, Reverend Gary Davis, Furry Lewis, and Bascom Lamar Lunsford, and now it is Watson who gave the songs a twist. “There’s so much beauty in this old music, and it affects me on a deep level. It moves me and inspires me.’’ With his wonderful voice and its slight vibration he is able to get stories through to the audience in an emotional way.

Support: Charlie Whitten
One could say about the support act that he has an old soul. Charlie Whitten used to be part of Andrew’s band, but is a singer-songwriter himself too. With his tracks he goes back to Pink Floyd in a way, but on the other hand it resembles Simon and Garfunkel. Whitten’s music feels familiar; the sounds are like a warm duvet during a cold winter night.

On Saturday 2 February Willie Watson and Andrew Combs will see to a fantastic concert in Der Aa-Theater, with Charlie Whitten as support act.
