Alfa Mist
De Londense Alfa Mist begon zijn muzikale reis als grime en hiphop producer. De autodidact toetsenist voelde zich al snel aangetrokken tot de jazz, wereldmuziek en filmsoundtracks die hij samplede. Vier albums later behoort Alfa Mist tot een van de grootheden in de Londense jazzscene. Op zijn tracks combineert hij melancholische jazzharmonie met alternatieve hip-hop en soul.
Alfa Mist behoort tot de generatie Engelse jazzcats die het genre nieuw leven inbliezen, in hetzelfde rijtje als Tom Misch, Kamaal Williams, Jordan Rakei en rapper Loyle Carner. Deze stroming muzikanten laat zich niet binnen een enkel genre vangen. Zo ook niet Alfa Mist met zijn achterover leunende urban jazz met alternatieve hiphopbeats en poëtische raps. Zijn muziek is niet in een hokje te plaatsen. Het ene moment in een intieme slaapkamer-productie, het andere moment in een jazz-ensemble, het ene moment als hip-hop beatmaker, het andere moment als neo-klassieke componist voor het London Contemporary Orchestra. Op 21 april brengt Alfa Mist het album Variables uit, de tweede release op zijn eigen label Anti-.
London-based musician Alfa Mist started his musical journey as a grime and hip-hop producer. The self-taught keyboardist quickly found himself inexorably drawn to the world music, jazz and movie soundtracks he sampled. Four albums later, and Alfa Mist is considered as one of the greats in the London jazz scene. On his tracks he combines melancholy jazz harmonies with alternative hip-hop and soul.
Alfa Mist belongs to the generation of English jazz cats who breathes new life into the genre, in the same line as Tom Misch, Kamaal Williams, Jordan Rakei and rapper Loyle Carner. This movement of musicians cannot be captured within one single genre. And neither can Alfa Mist, with his relaxed urban jazz with alternative hip-hop beats and poetic raps. His music won’t be pigeonholed. One moment he pops up in an intimate bedroom production, the next in a jazz ensemble. One moment he is a hip-hop beatmaker, the next a neo-classical composer for the London Contemporary Orchestra.
