A facinating journey through the world of cellists with twelve Berliner stars
Wanneer twaalf topcellisten uit het wereldberoemde Berliner Philharmoniker samen het podium betreden, staat je iets bijzonders te wachten. Al ruim vijftig jaar trekt het in 1972 opgerichte gezelschap wereldwijd volle zalen met een mix van klassieke meesterwerken, opzwepende tango’s, romantische chansons, filmische melodieën en speciaal voor hen geschreven repertoire. Hun klank is direct herkenbaar: twaalf cello’s die samen een zinderende, warme en kleurrijke sound creëren, maar die ook stevig kunnen knallen als de muziek daar om vraagt. Op 29 oktober komen de Berlijners naar Groningen om je mee te nemen op een fascinerende reis door celloland.
Als culturele ambassadeurs van hun stad traden de 12 Cellisten op tijdens verschillende staatsbezoeken. Hun cd’s zijn regelmatig terug te vinden in internationale hitlijsten en werden in 2001, 2005 en 2017 onderscheiden met de prestigieuze Echo Klassik Award, de voorloper van de Opus Klassik Award, een van de belangrijkste Duitse prijzen binnen de klassieke muziek. Hedendaagse componisten als Brett Dean, Tan Dun, Jean Françaix, Sofia Goebaidoelina, Arvo Pärt, Wolfgang Rihm, Kaija Saariaho en Pēteris Vasks schreven speciaal werk voor het gezelschap. Daarmee beschikt het ensemble over een repertoire dat zijn gelijke niet kent.
Het programma waarmee deze cellogiganten naar De Oosterpoort komen, laat perfect horen hoe breed hun muzikale horizon is. De Franse verfijning van Jean Francaix, de chansons van Michel Legrand en Edith Piaf, een krachtig nieuw werk van cello-icoon Giovanni Sollima, een hypnotiserende klassieker van John Adams, een weemoedig walsje van Dmitri Sjostakovitsj, de swingende Amerikaanse glamour van George Gershwin, spannende James Bond-muziek: dit en meer wordt verpakt in de rijke klank van de cello.

When twelve top cellists from the world-famous Berliner Philharmoniker take the stage together, you’re in for a treat. For over fifty years, the ensemble, founded in 1972, has been captivating audiences worldwide with a mix of classical masterpieces, exhilarating tangos, romantic chansons, cinematic melodies, and repertoire written especially for them. Their sound is instantly recognizable: twelve cellos that together create a vibrant, warm, and colorful sound, but can also deliver a powerful performance when the music demands it. On October 29th, the Berliners will come to Groningen to take you on a fascinating journey through celloland.
As cultural ambassadors for their city, the 12 Cellists have performed during various state visits. Their CDs regularly appear in international charts and were awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik Award in 2001, 2005, and 2017, the forerunner of the Opus Klassik Award, one of the most important German classical music prizes. Contemporary composers such as Brett Dean, Tan Dun, Jean Françaix, Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt, Wolfgang Rihm, Kaija Saariaho, and Pēteris Vasks have written works specifically for the company. This gives the ensemble an unparalleled repertoire.
The program these cello giants bring to De Oosterpoort perfectly showcases the breadth of their musical horizons. The French refinement of Jean Francaix, the chansons of Michel Legrand and Edith Piaf, a powerful new work by cello icon Giovanni Sollima, a hypnotic classic by John Adams, a melancholic waltz by Dmitri Shostakovich, the swinging American glamour of George Gershwin, thrilling James Bond music: all this and more is wrapped in the rich sound of the cello.
