Richard Thompson is een levende legende binnen de folkrockwereld. Door de Los Angeles Times wordt hij na Bob Dylan de beste rock songwriter en de beste elektrische gitarist sinds Hendrix genoemd. Als één van de oprichters van Fairport Convention ligt Thompson aan de basis van de Engelse folk-beweging uit de jaren 60, de stroming die door het succes van Mumford & Sons weer populair wordt.
Richard Thompson geldt als een inventief en technisch zeer begaafde gitarist. Thompson is vooral bekend als lid van Fairport Convention, de invloedrijke folkrockband die mede door hem is opgericht.
